Ramen Umai- University City — Restaurant in Philadelphia

I’m very surprised that Ramen Umai is averaging a 4.7 as it doesn’t hold a candle to a number of other comparably priced ramen shops I’ve been to. With a friend we ordered the spicy miso, chicken kuragi, and fish balls. The fish balls had decent flavor but were slightly undercooked and gummy. The ramen was unevenly spiced and just didn’t taste that good. The meat was very fatty, almost unchewable. When the chicken kuragi arrived at the table the waitress accidentally dropped chicken on the floor. She apologized but then left it on the floor… She left chicken on the ground. Can’t make this up. Then I had to ask for a replacement to the food that was dropped. I thought it was strange that I had to ask to receive all of what I was supposed to receive had she not dropped the food. Very strange and uncomfortable. In hindsight they must have been high. Save your money and spend it...

The food itself was pretty good. I got the gyudon which was exactly what you'd expect. However, the wait was really long given the circumstances. Gyudon is rice, thinly sliced meat, and a sauce. It had two picked items and two pieces of broccoli as toppings. That means it should basically only take as long to cook as the broccoli. Despite that, it was about a half an hour wait after ordering. Not terrible, but there was only one other table seated when I ordered, which makes me worry about a busy night. The waitress herself was friendly and came regularly to top off my water. The environment in the restaurant felt clean and had some neat decorations on the walls. This adorable place off 40th St in University City is a hidden gem. The service was astounding, so attentive, the place was spotless (including the bathrooms!), and most important of all: the delicious food. The green dish attached is something they’re experimenting with—pesto tonkatsu ramen! It was incredible, the flavor was so different but addictive, very fresh and herby. The pork belly is some of the best I’ve ever eaten, the ramen perfectly cooked, the Japanese Hot Pot took my breath away. The broth was sweet and savory, just exceptional.
