In the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City, where cobblestone streets whisper tales of revolution, Sonny’s Famous Steaks stands as a modern-day stronghold of culinary tradition. Since 1999, this unassuming establishment has been crafting cheesesteaks that not only honor the city’s rich heritage but also set a benchmark for excellence.
Stepping inside, you’re greeted by an ambiance that marries classic charm with contemporary flair. The black-and-white decor, a result of thoughtful renovations in 2013, offers a clean and inviting atmosphere. The communal tables encourage a shared appreciation for the artistry that unfolds behind the counter.
The menu, while offering a variety of options, rightly places the cheesesteak at its forefront. Each sandwich is a harmonious blend of thinly sliced rib-eye steak, succulent and juicy, nestled within a fresh Amoroso’s roll. The choice of cheese—be it the quintessential Whiz, creamy American, or sharp Provolone—melds seamlessly with the meat, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate.
What sets Sonny’s apart is its unwavering commitment to authenticity and quality. The accolades it has garnered, including being named “The Best Cheesesteak in Philly” by GQ Magazine, are well-deserved. Each bite reaffirms the dedication to preserving a culinary legacy while embracing the nuances that elevate it to contemporary relevance.

Sonny’s Famous Steaks truly lives up to its reputation as one of the best cheesesteak spots in Philadelphia! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome, setting the tone for an exceptional dining experience. The staff was incredibly attentive, ensuring our order was perfect and even offering recommendations on how to customize our cheesesteaks for the ultimate flavor.
Now, let’s talk about the cheesesteak—absolutely phenomenal! The beef was fresh and perfectly cooked, the cheese melted to perfection, and the roll had just the right amount of softness and chewiness. We were told the beef was cut fresh every morning and only seasoned with salt and pepper. Every bite was packed with flavor, proving why Sonny’s has been recognized as one of the best in the city.
A little history makes this place even more special—Sonny’s has been a staple in Philly, offering hand-cut, high-quality ribeye cheesesteaks in a more modern and welcoming setting compared to some of the more old-school spots. Their dedication to fresh ingredients and traditional preparation methods truly shines through.

Read moreWe went to Sonny's Famous Cheesesteaks based on it being the best according to GQ--read it on a map from the Independence Visitor Center. The taste was kind of bland...The cheese only gives the flavor. Maybe it was the quality of the meat or how it was cooked? Originally would have rated 3 to 3 and 1/2 stars, but they double charged us $42 and then $43.😢 And, didn't give my husband a receipt, which he needed for a business expense. He asked them to refund us, but they basically said no because he would just dispute both with our bank. And steal from them. The cashier told him to come back later for a receipt. We came back a second time and said they didn't have our transaction in the system. Would have to wait and come back later. What they don't know is we are from out of town on a business trip. How can we afford to waste our time again when they should have given a receipt in the first place? Also, they forgot to give us our drinks too. Glad we came back for that. Now, my husband has to go through the trouble of disputing one of the transactions anyways. Really was a stressful day because we also had our children with us... So, the overall review is 2 stars because the customer service is lacking. I know things are a little difficult now with Covid and whatnot, but please just treat your...
