Five Steakhouse at St. John's Resort Plymouth, Michigan
Overall, this is a good restaurant; fairly high-end menu with a nice bar and good service.
These were our impressions of the food we ate this evening, September 26, 2025.
The cranberry juice was watery as was the Guinness.
The shrimp cocktail was very, very nice, but they needed a bit more cocktail sauce on the plate.
The oysters were disappointing. It was like they took some perfectly fine oysters and went to town with some experimental garnish containing hot sauce and whatever that was ------/; they should've stayed in with the basic horseradish, balsamic vinegar, garnishes, garlic, etc.
The crab cakes were phenomenal, fresh, original and wholesome. The green garnish could've been a little more inspired. The sauces/dressings were a tad lazy.
The clam chowder was flavorful and most of the seafood was cooked through except for one big piece of seafood in there which was rubbery.
The salad was fresh, Thank you.
The chicken served in the chicken confit dish was tasty as well as the Au jus, if not a bit salty. However, the vegetables should've been cooked separately. They tasted like they had been grilled with the same meat. Quite distasteful actually.
The Australian lamb chops were perfect. We ordered well-done. My son ate all of them along with the sweet potato. (Well, I ate the sweet potato. And to speak of that, it had a bit too much cinnamon.)
What is this supposed to be? My cauliflower pasta was quite tasty but that's just because I'm so in love with noodles. Still, it was too small in portion. And, I wish they would've cooked the vegetables in this dish differently. Seems like they drew them from their noodle grill which carries a flavor of meat and other things non-vegetable. I understand why they would do this. I just don't think it's a good idea. The vegetables in the dish should have an independent flavor.
Desert: good but small. Strawberry cheesecake tastes homemade. Creamy actually. Accompanying sorbet not exciting.
The Five cream puff (which is supposed to have ice cream) was very flavorful but quite small, as oer the ice cream. We were so disappointed at the size we ordered an additional dish of ice cream.
So I'm giving the restaurant a 3.5 for dinner. Service good (our waitress was great);...
Read moreGreat space and atmosphere but the food at times left a lot to be desired for the price. If you have Celiac or eat GF then its worth the trip for the soups alone.
It was a frustrating experience since it was so close to being good.
Service was great, the wine selection was great. The interior is fantastic and spotless. This will sound snobby but we are very particular on wine glasses and decanters. The glasses there were fantastic, tall, wide, paper thin glass and spotless. Polished glasses and decanters make everything more appealing.
We started with a Charcuterie and it was hit and miss. The cheese was excellent, as was the jam and mustard. The meats however were not. The prosciutto was tough and thick. Paper thin and almost transparent prosciutto is excellent even if its not the best cut but it was much thicker than it should have been and had a tough texture. Whatever the beef offering was, same thing.
The wedge was good but the soups were excellent especially if you eat GF since they had an excellent New England clam chowder.
What was really disappointing was the Ribeye. Ribeye can be hit or miss. I've had the best, and worst, Ribeye at the same place and the staff usually knows what is good from week to week.
It was thin, no pics but similar to others posted and even with the fat was lacking flavor. For the cost it was average at best.
All the sides were excellent, we had the carrots and whipped potatoes.
Service was great although we always order in courses so we're not rushed, we tried to do this but the server wanted to get our order in and that resulted in soup and salad coming out at the exact same time.
Dessert was amazing and unique, and also GF. The Hakuna Money Ganache Torte was excellent and more than 2 people can eat.
For a $405 bill for 2, although that included 2 bottles of wine, food was around $250, however we split the ribeye and a few sides. The location, atmosphere, interior, settings, staff, etc. were all excellent. Just at that price you want the entire experience to be excellent.
We will go back and be a bit more selective on...
Read moreWe had guests from Europe last weekend and put them in three rooms at this resort for 2 nights. The rooms were nice and well appointed, the property was likewise elegant and comfortable. but that's where it ended. We had reserved a table days ahead of time for 14 people at 7:00 pm on the second evening. We arrived and they took our drink order and returned 30 minutes later. Another 30 minutes passed and we asked for bread baskets or something to pick at while we waited for our meals. They never asked anyone if we wanted another drink - we had to flag them down and ask for one, and still, they did not ask anyone else of they would like another. I asked why it was taking so long the waiter said since this was a large table, it takes longer, to which I replied, "It's no more than three tables of 5 and, by the way, we are the only table here." After an hour and 45 minutes, our meals arrived. Not wanting to make a fuss, I said nothing, but my steak was so salty it was almost inedible. Afterwards the others had admitted that they, too, did not, or did not want to eat their steaks because they were also far to salty. Furthermore, the menu only lists the steaks, and then "shareable" mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, etc. Most ordered the side dishes only to find out that potatoes and asparagus were included with their entrees. To add insult to injury, a 22% tip is automatically added to the bill regardless of the service or the food. Twenty-two percent, which is MORE than the generous 20% one may normally pay, and the total was near $1,500.00 when we left the FIVE three hours after we arrived, 20 minutes of which was spent eating. Afterwards we were invited to the rooms where I found that the alcohol on the in-room bar consisted of pints of vodka, rum, etc. and if opened, the room would be billed for $60 per bottle which if purchased a a store would cost $9.99 at the store. The resort looks nice and is very comfortable, but falls far short of 3 stars and was a HUGE...
