I misread the sign on my GPS and thought it had said "Crabby" Shack so I was expecting a menu just filled with fried or steamed varieties of seafood LOL This gem is in fact called the Cabbyshack because the first three letters "CAB" are the owners initials bf I believe his friends called him Cabby growing up. What's unique about the owner is that he has literally worked in every restaurant position known to man before owning this place. So he not only understands what his employees go through to make his place successful but he also equally knows how to appreciate them as well. I lived seeing that they had pictures scrolling of staff who were employees of the month for the current period and from the previous on their TV screens!
Read through some of the negative reviews and to be honest, those people just sound like little whiners and complainers about every little thing in their lives. Y'all need better hobbies....
Just to address some of the hate because there is always 2 sides to every story:
When you first open up the menu, yes, there is a plethora of fried food selections on ONE page. However continue opening up to the rest of the expansive menu and you'll see that there are a number of Blackboard Chef specials as well that would blow your mind. So no, this is not your typical fried seafood Extravaganza kind of place. So please look at the entire menu before you judge, just saying.
If you come on a holiday weekend, for an example July 4th, yes they will charge you a $50 reservation fee just in case you don't show up because July 4th is a prime weekend for them and since they are front and center of where the fireworks are, no matter what kind of Celebration you are celebrating, it's still a national holiday and you will get charged if you do not show up. Which I think is fair.
If you are from out of state, in Massachusetts they require a second form of ID when they card you. So just because you couldn't drink because you didn't look of age to drink and didn't have said second form of ID don't just leave a crabby review that isn't at all true just because you're sober for once.
I don't know how much y'all eat at home, but the portions here are not small, as one- reviewer claimed they were, but quite generous and is appropriate for what they charge.
Chef Rob Bono is a James Beard award winner who has worked at many famous and upscale establishments in his career. His Creations here are made with classic technique and inventive flavors and thoughtful execution. Trying to raise the bar Indy quality of food that is served at the cabbyshack oh, and he is most definitely accomplishing that here.
His award winning New England clam chowder is killer. Put that over some of their fries or clam fritters and it's literal heaven in a bowl. Really enjoyed, their lobster roll, that was NOT drowning in mayo and had a nice crunch with the addition of some fresh celery. The Bacon Scalepeño with a little spice bite, the sweet from an orange gastrique, salt and smoke from the bacon and the creamy bite of the pan seared scallop was perfect. Try the overstuffed stuffed quahog, and make sure it's truly toasted on the outside, The creamiest and crunchiest polenta frits, and the housemade lobster raviolis.
Drinks are great, great beers on tap and the staff is super friendly, warm and accommodating! It's a fun atmosphere with live music on...
Read moreSome people can't seem to judge a place. It's very easy to see this place is a casual, mainly seafood spot overlooking the water. Yes, it's touristy, but like most things in life if you keep things realistic and in perspective, you'll know what to expect and will not be let down. It isn't and doesn't bill itself as "exquisitely fine dining".... It specializes in typical casual seafood dishes - fried, broiled, rolls, chowder, burgers, etc. It's priced as a normal person would expect a summery, seafoody, touristy place to be priced. It wasn't cheap but also wasn't overpriced. My wife, myself and 5 year old went twice over 3 days because the food was fresh, it was convenient and had a nice view. Lobster rolls were fresh - not the best - but satisfying and filled fairly. I had a crab cake sandwich which was basic and in-line with its price. The fried calamari was very good and tender. However, both mixed drinks my wife had were a bit weak but weren't weak-priced. That's a pet-peeve of mine. I don't mind paying - but don't serve me sugar-water. You can walk-in wearing shorts, a t-shirt and sneakers, so it made a for a good, fast lunch spot. Waitresses were pleasant, service was good enough and we were there to have a tasty, casual bite, enjoy ourselves and chose not to compare it to Select Oyster Bar in Boston because it's apples and oranges. Go in expecting what it really is and you shouldn't be disappointed. We're from Long Island so we know good seafood, but the key is to set the proper expectations - it's not a "fine seafood establishmnet" - it's a "lunch seafood establishment". I see people stating "it wasn't worth it" but the prices weren't outrageous, so what wasn't worth it? Two adults and a 5 year old averaged $55 over two visits (with 1 alcoholic drink and one lobster roll each time). We can't go to Applebee's for much less. What are people expecting? No, I have no affiliation to the restaurant but I dislike two-sentence reviews that bash a place without supporting their opinion. I sometimes read reviews before going and tend to expect more effort by people - my mistake. FYI...Due to our lovely Covid environment these days, there are no menus. You need to scan a QR code on your phone and it will bring you to their menu. Some people were complaining about that but we had no...
Read moreWent here while on vacation July 15 with my girlfriend. Wanted a nice drink chill by the water/live music before going back to our Airbnb. We were greeted by the bouncer at the door and he rudely declined our very much real IDs. We are from PA not MA. So I can understand some confusion and/or asking us to show something else with our names on it etc. Which we did. He saw our IDs multiple times and rudely declined. I tried to say that sir we were 27/28 years old. Ask for a manager -even asked for an officer on duty that may be around. He said we were trespassing and needed to leave. While walking towards us “pushing” us down stairs with people behind us waiting to get in. No help no manager.
We then found a worker/manager at another entrance around the building who also was not helpful and proceeded to tell us that it was over 21. YES sir we know -27/28 here LOL. They eventually let us in. I didn’t even want to bring my business there after the horrible welcoming. But my friend is the type to “make it happen for the point”.
When inside the bouncer continued to harass us yelling and making a scene that we needed to leave-causing another employee to jump in and say we were let in by the manager.
Please -Get a scanner or a book to look up IDs. Do better please. No one should have to be humiliated like that while on vacation. I’m a bartender myself and I check IDs from all over constantly. You should have a book to compare or a scanner. If I’m ever unsure I ask for help.
If you’re a tourist with an out of state ID-maybe bring a passport. But who knows if they’ll even know how...
