Boxcar Pizza Soars: A Portland Masterpiece of Dough, Fire, and Flavor
PORTLAND, Ore. — In a city that takes its pizza seriously, Boxcar Pizza isn’t just competing—it’s rewriting the rules. Tucked away in a vibrant corner of Portland’s culinary landscape, this unassuming spot delivers pies that are equal parts creative and crave-worthy, with a wood-fired finesse that leaves no doubt: This is one of the best pizzerias in America.
The Head On Collision is the kind of pizza that sparks obsession. A perfect marriage of chewy, blistered crust and bold toppings—spicy soppressata, honey that crackles into caramelized gold under the heat, and creamy stracciatella that cools the fire—it’s a symphony of contrasts. Each bite is a thrill ride, balancing heat, sweetness, and richness with the precision of a chef who knows exactly what they’re doing.
Then there’s the Bacon Damn Sure, a pie that elevates simplicity to brilliance. Smoky “bacon”, caramelized onions, and a swirl of béchamel meld into something greater than the sum of its parts, while the crust—airy at the edges, crisp beneath—proves Boxcar’s dough game is untouchable. This isn’t just pizza; it’s craftsmanship.
Even the classics shine. The margherita, with its vibrant tomato sauce and milky fresh mozzarella, is a testament to the power of perfect execution. But Boxcar’s true magic lies in its willingness to take risks, turning each pie into a conversation piece without ever sacrificing flavor for novelty.
The space itself—rustic, warm, buzzing with energy—feels like the ideal setting for this kind of culinary alchemy. Servers move with the ease of people who know they’re serving something special, and the aroma of wood smoke and melting cheese wraps around you like an invitation to stay all night.
Boxcar Pizza isn’t just a meal; it’s an event. With every slice, it makes the case that Portland’s pizza scene isn’t just keeping up with the giants—it’s...
Read moreI visited this place with my friends and absolutely loved the taste of its pizza. I highly recommend everyone to go and try this one out. This place serves vegan pizzas, which are best for someone struggling with allergies or wanting to try non-veg made of vegan items. Pizzas are highly priced at ~$20 if we compare them to Costco. The names are funky 🤩. We three friends ordered vegan beef pizza with lovely goat cheese called Map Change, vegan pork pizza with pepperoni, tomato sauce if you like Italian called Head on Collision and vegan chicken pizza called Strings of Collision with vegan Chicken and jalapeno. Loved the goat cheese made using no milk
Star dish - Map Change if you like goat cheese, Strings of Nashville for Chicken and want to try jalapeno and Head on Collision for Italian tomato, sauce basil and pepperoni style
Food - is awesome and wholesome; we can tell the difference, though; if you are a hardcore non-veg, you have to be curious and try to order your drinks ahead and have a conversation while your pizza is getting ready. I loved the goat cheese and liked jalapeno for the first time because it was not overpowering in my chicken vegan pizza - Strings of Nashville. Ambience - high bar-style seating, though there's a connecting shared area in the back with plenty of space. It would be great if the toilets were cleaner. Service - The restaurant makes fresh pizza and might take some time so order your drinks ahead and have a conversation while your pizza is...
Read moreUPDATE2! They totally figured out the issues and are serving bombbbb pizzas again! Had a whole menu overhaul too!
UPDATE: reached out directly and the owner is super responsive and is addressing these issues. I love this place and can't wait to give them a try again. Will update when issues are fully resolved!
I hate to write this review. I had been to Boxcar about 3 times last year and it was freaking delicious! Best vegan pizza ever, crispy crust, delicious toppings, best ranch hands down. Well I came here last month and last night. Both times the crust either wasn't cooked all the way or became insanely soggy in the time it took to bring it to their seating area. They have also decided to just dump huge amounts of tomato sauce all over the top of the pizzas. I'm eating pizza, not tomato sauce. I walked in last night and asked if they were still making pizza due to their back door being locked and it was 8pm. I just wanted to not be rude as they closed at 9pm. They guy was NOT friendly. We ordered and explained the issues last time and he was so defensive saying everything is standard and exactly the same. It was our fault the dough was soggy. Then, the exact same thing happened last night. These photos are both of the Green Supreme, the nicer pizza is from November, the pizza sauce covered one...
