We were so excited to try Douro. Having both spent time in Portugal and knowing the cuisine well, our expectations were high and the atmosphere and service certainly delivered. The bartenders and servers were exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive; it’s been a long time since we’ve experienced service of that caliber.
Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite live up to the same standard. The smoked mussel tartare and marinated olives were excellent, but the other dishes, including the pork pica pau, shrimp chouriço, and chicken croquetas, were overwhelmingly salty to the point of being inedible. We had anticipated a touch of saltiness from the cured pork, but the heavy hand with seasoning across several plates made it very difficult to enjoy the meal. It was disappointing, as each dish was beautifully presented and clearly prepared with care.
We also didn’t appreciate the unexpected 3% “kitchen wellness” charge added to the bill, as it wasn’t mentioned in advance. Because of that added fee, we left a smaller tip than we normally would have, which was unfortunate since the service itself...
