For my first visit to Farmer and the Beast in Northwest Portland's Nob Hill food carts, I had their Fancy Beast (pictured), which is their featured burger for Portland Mercury's Burger Week 2021. At $6, this is a delightful, fancy burger. Very good flavors. High quality beef (a Nicky USA dry aged blend), good seasoning, cooked to a perfect, slightly pink medium, bougie, gruyere cheese, a wave of sweetness from the bacon-caramelized onion jam and the potato bun, and a little punch from the zesty capers in the aioli. Fantastic!

Roughly tied, as my favorite, of the nine that I have now tried, this Burger Week 2021 (though, again, I emphasize that none of them have been bad). I can instantly tell, these people know burgers! I will definitely be back to try other menu items.

On a subsequent visit, I had the Watermelon Panzanella Bowl (pescatarian), which was fantastic. Very different, refreshing, and beautiful. It is a strange but brilliantly synergized mixture of textures and flavors; sweetness, light saltiness, and umami. This dish would be particularly amazing on a hot Summer day.

I recently decided to visit this place based on the buzz surrounding their supposedly mouth-watering sandwiches. I, an ardent lover of burgers, went for their much-hyped 'Smash Burger', while my partner chose another popular sandwich, their chicken sandwich, from the menu.

Upon our first bite, our expectations hit the ceiling but soon came crashing down. The Smash Burger, priced at a whopping $11, was mediocre at best. While it wasn't awful, it certainly didn't deliver the taste explosion that the price tag implied.

However, the second sandwich – the one my partner ordered – outdid the first in disappointing us. It was so drenched in grease that it was rendered practically inedible. What was meant to be a deliciously indulgent meal quickly became a sloppy mess, so much so that it necessitated a small mountain of napkins to combat the deluge of oil. I've attached a picture here and you can see just how much oil we're talking about.

I understand that some people may enjoy a certain level of greasiness in their sandwiches. However, this was way overboard, and frankly, felt like it undermined the ingredients' inherent flavors. This sandwich should come with a warning sign or perhaps a...

Heres my problem, I have been a regular at this place for about 2 years now to the point where they know my name and order quite well. The food here is delicious, fries are high quality and so are the burgers. But when I went there to get some burgers i noticed that they have added a new system where you now press buttons on a screen. I asked if they took cash and they didn't. They have previously taken cash from me very happily but now they changed it so i couldn't get the food. As a regular I felt conflictingly upset because I really lime the people and the restaurant, but find the fact that they refuse cash ridiculous. I don't know how it isn't illegal to do this, as a teenager without a card restaurants refusing my service leaves me without many options. I hope that they change back to taking cash because i use it quite frequently. I have also found the cooks to be very inconsistent and careless, often adding to little sauce and not adding the correct amount of patties at my (very high) expense. This food-cart would benefit from a brick and mortar location/larger location/ second location due to the wait times being at times unacceptably long (I have waited an hour...

Oh I wanted so badly to enjoy this place, it looked like my kind of burger! We must have ordered at the wrong time, I think they were over-extended. When I arrived to pickup the food, I ended up having to wait another 30 minutes. They were getting hammered with people and online orders. We eventually did get our food and it was pretty good. The burger I'd say was decent, like much better than any fast food, but I don't know, there was something that was missing to take it to the next level. My wife agreed. The french fries were excellent! I also got the chicken sandwich which I thought would be stellar, but it was a little burnt to be honest, so the burnt bits sort of overpowered the taste. I think maybe this place is a victim of their popularity? I'd like to try them again at a less busy time. They definitely make some good food, but the night we went it wasn't quite there.
