A great place for Indian food in Portland. Hi Bombay is located in the "Cinamon Building", down the street from Brian Boru's and near the statue of the director John Ford. The interior is cozy, clean, and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. There is a large television that constantly plays Bollywood dance routines, which is nice to have during lulls in conversation. The food is amazing and pretty decently priced. They give you free papadum (very addictive spicy/crispy bread, almost like tortilla) at the beginning of the meal and their garlic naan is to die for. My favorite dish is pretty basic - chicken Tikka masala - although I love most of their dishes I've tried. Would definitely recommend for a night out if you're in the area, but they also have carry out.

Tucked away from the bustle, Hi Bombay is one of Portland’s best-kept secrets for Indian food. No gimmicks, no over-the-top frills—just quality, authentic flavors that hit all the right notes. We went classic with garlic naan, mutter paneer, and malai kofta, and every bite delivered comfort and richness. The naan came warm and pillowy with just the right garlicky punch, the mutter paneer was fresh and perfectly spiced, and the malai kofta… creamy, fragrant, and the kind of dish you don’t want to share. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into a local secret—quiet, unfussy, and all about the food. For anyone craving soulful Indian cooking in Portland, Hi Bombay is the answer.

First experience with Hi Bombay, it’s my friends birthday, and our first try at Indian food..It wasn’t exactly bad, yet I did ask for 0 spice and it still was slightly spicy. Then again we didn’t know what to expect, this was our first try at this type of food. We are glad there’s so many options (Vegetarian, Gluten-free, Etc.) Personally I think there’s not enough beverage Choices for non-Alcohol consumers. The tables are fairly small, but in all honestly it was a nice experience in general, the staff was nice, the moment you forget the food here it comes! Good enough for first timers, ( funny enough, there’s a weed store, right next to the restaurant )

easily the most rude service that i've ever experienced at a restaurant. my friend and went out to dinner together. she ordered her food mild, (the waitress asked her for a number between 1 and 10 for spice level, my friend answered "3".) when she received her food, it was so hot that it was burning her lips and completely inedible. she respectfully told the waitress, (the young woman did not give us a name when she sat us), and the waitress asked her if she would like some "gel or vinegar" to lessen the spice. my friend took a mango jelly from the waitress to add to her dish to see if it would lessen the heat. she attempted it-- it did not help enough, it was still inedible. she let the waitress know this, and the kitchen made her another dish. through the WHOLE dinner, the old meal was left on the table (it was not removed, which we found odd.) when we were done eating, the waitress asked us if we "wanted a box" for the inedible meal. we politely let her know that we did not want it. when the waitress came out with the check, BOTH the new meal and the old meal (that my friend took 2 bites from!) were listed. my friend kindly asked the waitress to remove it as she did not eat it, and she was told "it was touched" and therefore she would be charged for it but she "had to ask the kitchen." when she returned, she removed the old dish from the check, but SLAMMED the check down on the table, said absolutely nothing to us-- and grabbed our cards from the table without saying a word to us. she was incredibly disrespectful, rude, and passive aggressive. some of the most rude and mean behavior-- we will not be returning again. i was a frequent customer...

Hi Bombay is Absolutely Without Question The BEST Indian Food In Portland!!!

Hi Bombay Vs. Taj Indian Cuisine: I have tried both and I have to say that Hi Bombay makes Taj Indian Cuisine seem like a poorly managed McDonald's. Hi Bombay is better in every single way so I really don't feel like I need to compare them.

Hi Bombay has generous portions, amazing Naan with a whole assortment of delicious dipping sauces and the Chicken Curry is to die for!!!😍🥘🍛🍞

Take Out Vs. In Person Dining: I ordered take out and my only complaint is that there wasn't that much curry sauce. This is why I gave it 4 stars, but I have no doubt that in person dining would be deserving of a perfect 5 stars!!! Some people might consider the small amount of sauce a good thing because the container was so packed with chicken there was no more room for sauce.

Spicy Level: Don't Be Shy. It's Not That Spicy Relative to Other Restaurants That Offer A Number Scale.

I got a level 6 spicy with a side of spicy sauce so I could make it spicier as needed. I should point out that the spicy sauce is flavorful but not really that spicy relatively speaking. I mean I drowned my curry in the stuff to substitute for the minimal curry sauce and it was great. Don't be afraid to get a 9 or 10 spicy level if you like a kick. Or just get a side of sauce like I did. They gave me a huge portion and I plan to save it & use it on a bunch of dishes because...

I happened to be in town for my birthday and my girlfriend and I were looking for a place to eat. On our walk through the city, we came across this restaurant.

This is is quaint place with a cozy vibe and delicious Indian cuisine. The service was fantastic, our server was very kind, sweet, and accommodating. Everything was so delicious, we got the Aloo Gobi, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Vindaloo, and a couple of Samosas with some Masala Tea (Chai). They do their spiciness on a 1-10 scale and we went with 5 for everything. It was a good level without being too overwhelming while still maintaining some level of authenticity. I think I would do a 6 or a 7 next time.

We would definitely eat here frequently if we lived in Portland. This is a gem of a restaurant. Great service, reasonably priced (for the type of cuisine and the city), and a solid alternative in a town that favors seafood. If you're into Indian cuisine or just want to try something new, I would definitely recommend giving this restaurant a chance to earn your business. They have such a wide selection (including vegetarian options) that there's bound to be something for most...
