I’m only rating this high because of every one who works there other than the female bartenders. Super unfortunate that I have to prepare myself to be ignored for at least 15 minutes of waiting until being helped only to be confronted with attitude. I am a girl and have been cut off twice after just one shot after I’ve complimented them. Just because I am nice does not mean I’m wasted. At this point ordering drinks are so inconvenient I have to have my guy friends to do it for me because otherwise I’m waiting for far too long. All of my girlfriends and I have experienced this just about every-time we’ve gone out. Two nights ago it was substantially crowded because of a Timbers game but when it cooled down my friends and I grabbed our first drink of the night. The whole side of the bar was empty besides two other men. We waited there a solid 10 minutes until my guy friend came up and got helped almost immediately BEFORE us. Thankfully he directed her to us (we were standing right next to him) afterwards and her smile towards him changed to a rbf to us instantly. Another run in I had with the same bartender was when I was grabbing my second shot of the night. She took my order and I waited there for 15 minutes while I saw her helping other people. Not too long after I ordered again from a different girl and the first girl called her over. She leaned in and whispered to her pointing at me. The second gal came back over and told me I had been cut off. I waited 15 minutes with absolutely no indication that I had been cut off. Incredibly unprofessional. I’ll make sure to grab her name next time. They all slightly look the same so I don’t have a great description, I have to be honest if you want to treat me rudely I will not be tipping you in the future whatsoever as I persistently tip you 25%+ only to be treated terribly. The men staff are absolutely wonderful and told me that they’ve been told by other girls the females are sexist. So I’m extremely disappointed, do better girls. I promise I treat my bartenders and service workers well, so treat us well too. I understand the this kind of industry is tough but the instant judgement and lack of service I get when I come makes me want to never come again. I come only to see friends and chat with the male staff. I’ve given you...

Could have been!

I was looking for a good dive to have a pint, play some pool and watch some sports. For around 3-4 weeks I thought I had found my neighborhood bar to unwind at after work..... then Tuesday, May 20th happened.

!st I asked if I could exchange a couple of dollars in dimes for quarters to play pool and was told by the waitress and the bartender NO. I walked the 4 blocks to Fred Meyers to exchange the dimes and foolishly came back.

When I came back I ordered a beer from the bartender and went to the back room to play pool. The waitress came in and I ordered a whiskey. She clearly asked me if I had a tab started and I said yes but when I went to leave she acted completely dumb and said she did not realize I had a tab already and asked if she could run my card twice, once for the tab with the bartender for a beer and once for her tab for the whiskey. I understand that she wanted to get credit and tipped for her service but I have no tolerance for people who lie just to get an extra $1 tip on one drink. I called her out on the fact that I had made it clear I already had a tab and all I got back was a "OK sweetie".

I hope the extra $1 tip and tiny bit of less hassle exchanging the dimes was worth losing the $300 -$400 in sales and $60-$80 in tips a month. It's unfortunate because the other employees working different...

Pros: Service Price Ping Pong Pool Free Popcorn Can't not see a TV

Cons: Crowd

-Service- Service is great here, always got served fast. Drinks are not bad, not good either, a good neutral. Same goes for food.

-Price- One of the cheapest places in town, great place to visit.

-Ping Pong- While I suggest that you bring your own paddles, they do have a ping pong table and are one of the few places nearby with one. Although, the table does not have the room it needs, but at least they have one.

-Pool- They have several pool tables.

-Free Popcorn- Free popcorn, don't expect much, but it is free.

-Can't not see a TV- I swear there are more TVs here than people.

-Crowd- After going on a weekend twice, we learned to only go here on week nights, when the crowd is actually good. On weekends the crowd is all people with spiked hair and popped collars who will hit on your girlfriend in ridiculously sexist ways while you are sitting right next to her. This wasn't just one person, seriously everyone there looks like that and acts that way. Though it is pretty funny when they get pissed off at you for play ping pong because they sat next to the table and the balls keep flying off, even though you were playing ping pong before...

Gyros, baby! Maybe not the best in PDX, but still a warm, toothy wrap of satisfying goodness. I always go with the chicken version, with nice tender chunks of bird smothered in a pseudo ā€œGreekā€ tzatziki sauce. Not the biggest, but it’s reasonably priced and it’s just always so tasty. Pair it with a crisp Pilsner from the fairly deep tap list, and you’re good to go. Just so ya know, Marathon is a full-on sports bar, with the bar up front, TVs pinned almost everywhere and some pool tables and other games out in the back room, downstairs. Order at the bar and the food will find you somehow. Lighting is dim, and there are no (or few) windows but it’s still all somehow cheery and welcoming, with warm wood tones and a laid back vibe. Lots of video poker games up front too, but hey — there’s free popcorn! A slice of old Portland I’m glad is still here, especially on those cold rainy nights. PS, the bathroom is pretty trashy. Of course.

Marathon Taverna was a good pit stop for a late night bite. The service was prompt and the food was tasty. I got one of their gyros and fries and it hit the spot! They had a community popcorn machine and the popcorn was also up to par. Would definitely recommend this place. Sadly there was a conceited patron sitting next to me at the bar, the food was good enough for me to tune her out; that is until her friend came and started hitting on me. Although slightly off putting, I got through the meal with my brain cells intact.

SHADY. The price of everything on the online menu is considerably less expensive than the menus provided at the restaurant/bar. Even worse, the charges on the actual bill are much higher than the menu provided inside. I asked the bartender why the prices didn’t match the menu and she said, ā€œ all the menus are differentā€. Bad business practices all around. Spend your money at a dive bar that actually is honest with customers. SHADY SHADY
