Outstanding beer, this would be a 5 star rating if it was soley based on the taproom unfortunately the "Wursthaus" is included under the same name.
On two separate occasions have I experienced rude service from an older man with glasses and gray salt and pepper hair I assume is a manager.
Today, he decided to take my business elsewhere after he impolitely informed me that minors are prohibited. The "minor" he was speaking of happened to be my 8-Month old baby who was sleeping at the time. He claimed it was due to OLCC policy that he could not serve us food with a minor in our presence, however we had already been served alcohol. I am fairly certain the OLCC would frown upon any establishment that sold it's guests alcohol yet refused to provide food that was on the menu. This being said, the "food" here is not worth the trip anyway.
I am originally from Switzerland, the food here is nothing to write home about, it is mediocre at Best.
The only item worth ordering is just the plain old Bratwurst, don't bother with their "Röstie" or Spätzlen I've ordered both and threw them straight in the rubbish bin in side the restaurant.
All readers, the Taproom is excellent, the Wursthaus...
Read morePros: Went in at opening, place was dead, not even busy when I left. Beer quality was really good. All German and Belgian beer. Clean, fair atmosphere, nothing exciting. Good service, bartender plenty friendly, answered questions.
Cons: Small tap selection. Only 8... really?? Bad location. Not ghetto but in a residential area out of the way. There tap list is not current on the web site, facebook, twitter, anywhere. I asked where I can find it. Was told I have to come in. I'm not going on a road trip to find out what the current selection is. Beer prices not on menu that I could find.
Would still recommend you go. Overall I liked it.
If you only want bitter beers, don't bother going. Nothing here is hoppy. I like it this way! Not everybody likes super hoppy beer.
Sidebar comment to NIKO: Not allowing minors in a 21 and over bar is in fact an OLCC rule and goes back decades. Minors include babies. Anybody under 21. This is state law. Please do not bring your baby or kids to a bar. That is...
Read moreI used to love Occidental and still am a big fan of their beer. I will not be returning or giving them any business as the manager (owner?) refused to serve my friend and I because I happened to have a sleeping baby in a carrier. The laws are frankly pretty opaque about this in Oregon, and most breweries have not given me any issue. I’ve asked restaurant and brewery owners, and all have indicated that so long as food is being served, it is considered a restaurant. In other words, the owner of Occidental is choosing to enforce an old and archaic law arbitrarily even though literally no bar, brewery or restaurant has lost their liquor license in Oregon for such a violation in recent history. Also, the dude just had bad vibes. I strongly recommend the beer garden across the parking lot, which thankfully serves delicious alternative European-style beers. Cheers to Portland for having...
