Starter Bread — Restaurant in Portland

Worth the wait. Open Sundays 10-2, the line may take 30+ minutes but everyone is super friendly - everyone is hyped on what they’re waiting for! There is a bread subscription you can get through their website currently which seems like a great idea if you’re able to! This Sunday (09.22.2024) we got: Pretzel (comes with whole grain mustard) Olive twist (comes with chili oil) Eggplant Focaccia Slab with cheese and onions (it’s like a slice of pizza, sprinkled with fresh herbs, it’s so good) Blueberry Corn Scone Double Cocoa Rye Cookie (described as “the best cookie I’ve ever had in my life” by two people) Farm Boule loaf Marinated Zucchini sandwich on baguette with chèvre and chili (didn’t get a picture of this, it was eaten immediately)

Starter Bread is one of our very favorite things about Portland. Each loaf is delicious and we love the variety from week to week. The amazing array of whole grains and the variety of ways in which they're treated (sprouted, toasted, fermented, so many techniques!) makes each loaf super exciting and super healthy. There's no better way to get a diversity of whole grains in your diet than this delicious bread. Best of all, we get an email each week that tells a story about the history of the grain used in that week's bread, and the farm from where it came. I learn so much from those emails and am so grateful to know a little bit about the farms and mills that our subscription supports. Absolutely can't recommend Starter Bread highly enough. So I have never been here, because I'm always running my coffee shop just a few blocks away on the only day they're open, but one of my wonderful regulars has been bringing me the olive twist loaf most Sundays the past few weeks, and it's really excellent. My first job ever was at a very small, from scratch, old world style bakery, and so I really appreciate the quality of their bread. Real bread like this is far too rare. Today however, I was brought a turkey sandwich with pickled veggie slaw of some sort and it's one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life. Absolutely the best I've had in years.
