Without a doubt in my mind, the best coffee and service in Portland is experienced at Sterling.
I typically arrive 'early' in the morning--8 o'clock at the latest. This is more than enough time to beat any sort of crowd, and includes one additional perk: a high probability of witnessing the local dogs and cats whom share the same comfortable and inviting little coffee shop nestled below the northwest hills.
After my order is taken, I wait patiently. Leaning against the front door's aging frame, as I silently admire the dexterity of the espresso machine operator, I casually eavesdrop on conversations (if any) scattered throughout the room.
Then, of course, while my mind iterates through dreams of myself, one-day, owning that high-end coffee contraption displayed on the top shelf (you know the one), I recognize the barista weaving their way toward me--a cup in their hand (occasionally accompanied by a fresh maple scone), and a genuine smile across their face.
I unconditionally smile back, express my gratitude, gather my few belongings, and head out the door.
It may seem pretentious to some, but the simplicity of this service is where my love for Sterling originated; that natural, person-to-person interaction inherently brings me joy. Here, there is no need to attentively listen for your name to be yelled across a crowded cafe (like many other coffee shops around).
Instead, Sterling's tranquility is maintained from entrance to exit, cultivating a truly...
Read moreRare gem in the Portland coffee scene. Been into the shop a few times and ordered beans delivered a few times and I will always continue to support this business.
It's hard to say why it's so much better here than at other roasters/shops but I'll try. I would describe it as elevated service but without any bit of stuffiness or pretension.
Doesn't try to hard to be cool. Doesn't care about fads- only the timelessness of great coffee. I could see this place in the 1800's in a busy seaport town slinging the same quality or in year 2300.
That amazing service shines through even to mail order. If you live in the Portland area you WILL GET FRESH ROASTED COFFEE DELIVERED WITHIN LIKE 3 DAYS. My most recent order i put in on Friday. Roasted Monday. Delivered Tuesday.
And finally the beans are just outta this world. Do yourself a favor. Skip the gimmicky shops and go for the classic.
Great space. Everyone was ALWAYS friendly. Even to my kids. They make you feel like they want you there. And additionally it's always so obvious everyone there likes what they do and...
Read moreI was in NW Portland to see a movie at 21st Century Theatre and had some time to spare. I looked up and saw Sterling Coffee and decided to give them a try.
I ordered and iced caramel latte because it was a warm sunny afternoon and I decided to sit outside. When it was brought out it was filled to the brim. I was delighted by the way the coffee, milk, and caramel danced in layers, cascading amongst the ice. After a gentle blend with my straw I took a sip. WOW!! I was immediately struck by the smooth and balanced flavor. It wasn't too sweet or too bitter. It was pretty near perfect. I can't remember the last time I had such good coffee. I truly savored each sip. I look forward to coming back and trying more off their menu.
If you're ever in NW Portland and have a hankering for a good cup of coffee and some unique people watching, I strongly recommend Sterling Coffee Roasters. My only regret is not getting the name of the staff. They were so kind and patient and I would have loved to give them a personal shout out. ☕️ ❤️ I can't recommend this place...
