21st Avenue Quick Stop Market — Local services in Portland

I have mixed feelings about this place. I was liking the selection of things I'm not used to as a tourist, and the worker seemed like he had a good attitude at first greeting a couple minutes before choosing what I wanted. When I went to the cash register, he told me the amount, and I started pulling out a card. He very coldly stated "cash only". Being not from the country I didn't have USD, and I was fine not getting what I wanted but a less curt response would've been appreciated.

The reason I'm not giving 2 stars is because as I turned around from the cash register the man behind me said he'd buy my item for me. Very kind! Another of many moments of kindness from the people of this city. Sure, it's not directly the store's doing, but it shows the good clientele this store receives and gives me hope that maybe the worker just had an off moment. TLDR: Have cash! A previous review stated that the card reader was faulty so maybe they took cards at one point but didn't get a new machine when theirs...

Really nice Kurdish immigrant family runs this. The women that work during the day after especially friendly, remember you, just so welcoming.

What I really love is that they seem to be that friendly with everyone--not just the "normal" people. Lots of homeless people, or those who evince obvious mental illness in the area. If they go in, they get the same warm treatment, as far as I've seen. This is a really refreshing change from what you often see.

No doubt exceptions that arise, but I expect they're merited lol. Regardless, this tolerant, friendly, take-it-as-it-comes attitude is what I have loved about this neighborhood; glad to see it still persists in...

This place is great aside from the fact that trying to match up their google hours with their iPhone maps hours AND their actual business hours is comparable to finding a needle in a haystack. It WAS the only mini mart open late (until 2am at least) within walking distance until probably the 1st of the year(?)… just walked there in the pouring down rain with the expectation they’d be open for another 45 minutes, but no such luck. I guess I should’ve called first to make sure: That’s my bad.

Edit: I have never once been able to get through to the store via phone call.. owner needs to update the phone...
