We came here for a late dinner in a Thursday in August while vacationing in the area. It was close to the hotel we were staying at so the location was convenient. We sat at the bar. The bartender greeted us and provided menus. We had a couple drinks and ordered chips and salsa and a quesadilla with chicken to share. The food came out quickly. I looked a the quesadilla and wasn’t sure that it had chicken in it so I opened a piece up and it didn’t so we got the bartender’s attention and he was very apologetic and offered to let us keep that one while a new one was remade but we weren’t hungry enough to eat two and we didn’t want to take one to go so he took that one away. He brought a new one out to us and I will say the flavor was good. There was a lot of black beans in it, which I do like but my man does not, however there really wasn’t too much chicken. They added some but it was a small amount of small pieces. We ate it. I don’t know how my stars will translate to a rating but I gave 3 for the food - what we had was just appetizers but typical bar food - and 4 for the service and atmosphere because the bartender was friendly and we did enjoy the atmosphere. It’s very much a sports bar so it was laidback and casual on a Thursday night - lots of TVs to watch games. Prices were good. Not sure on parking since we walked but I’m pretty sure it’s street parking.

I talked my group into giving this place a try as it was "later" on a Friday night and we were hungry and some of us wanted drinks. My 17 year old daughter was allowed inside even though it was 10pm! (She does not even try to drink, we were just hungry mostly). We got excellent service. Our bartender/server didn't let any drinks (water or otherwise) get low. The food was so great, my daughter and I went back 2 additional times during out trip!. We've been home for a month and she keeps taking about how much she misses The Independent. She even got some merch on our last day (they didn't have my size 😁). If and when I get back to Portland this will be one of my first stops! In our 3 meals there, I think I only got pix of our waters and get Shirley Temple and the desert she destroyed! The rest we destroyed too quickly.

Came to Independent for a 10am Seahawks game. Pretty busy spot with lots of TV’s and multiple games on. Server was great and attentive, highly recommend the Hot Shot for a morning drink. And then…we got our breakfast… I ordered the Indy Hash substitute Brussels Sprouts for mushrooms and Texas toast. What I got was a plate of French fries with two fried eggs on top, scant of vegetables and no Texas toast. She ordered Eggs Benedict and those also came with French fries instead of breakfast potatoes. The person who dropped off our breakfast said “sorry we ran out of potatoes!” This is not okay! If you don’t have the ingredients available for what we ordered then give us another option. This is not unreasonable. If you come here in the morning for a game order food early before they run out of necessary ingredients.

If I could give this 0 stars I would. Misogyny & microaggressions.

If you are not a white, cis, het man or in a group with that majority, you will be discriminated against. There was not a single black person there, which should’ve tipped me off. And there weren’t any groups of non-cis men.

My friends and I sat down & were immediately ignored by the bartender. After 15min, we didn’t even get the waters we asked for. They were busy, so we shrugged it off. I asked a server to change one of the 3 TVs near us playing the same game. The manager came over with a remote, so I asked curiously if it was possible bc I was eager to watch my Alma mater play. He proceeded to condescend to me (explaining how TVs work) and as he walked away put up his hands in front of me and said, “Just let me do my job.” Our group (of 6 women) was quiet and at no point was rude, demanding nor outwardly upset - though we should’ve been.

This was 20min after we sat down and the bartender finally came over to get our orders. I calmly mentioned that the manager was quite rude. The bartender said, “Well you’re welcome to tell him that bc I’m not going to.” Then, unprompted, he said,” If you don’t like it you can leave.” So we did.

Don’t comment unless you have something constructive or kind to add. Curious to see if management responds considerately...

Just flew into town and wanted a great spot to watch opening football season...sat at the bar, male bartender served me a drink, handed me a menu and never asked or acknowledged me again, I shouldn't say that, we walked by my empty glass 5 times, looked at it, and couldn't walk away fast enough. Basically sat there for 45min with an empty glass poised perfectly at the edge of the bar to be claimed for a refill. Finally the female bartender saw my empty glass, (by this time there was only 2:17 left in the 4th quarter) asked if I wanted another, but by then I was over it and the fact I was starving, so I paid for my only drink and left to find a much friendlier place that wanted to make money off of my many drinks and food. I'm a great tipper too. If my staff treated customers this way, they'd not have a job. But the best part of PDX, there is so many bars to choose from, you can always...
