We had the pleasure of enjoying both dinner and breakfast at The Tavern, and the experience was memorable from start to finish. For dinner, we were joined by two guests, and the food truly impressed all of us. My wife ordered the sirloin—typically not a cut I associate with being top-tier—but I stand corrected. It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever tasted. Fortunately, I had ordered the ravioli and was able to trade for a few bites. That said, the ravioli portion was on the smaller side, so if you arrive hungry, it might not be the most satisfying choice. Our guests shared the roasted chicken, which was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and generously portioned. It was large enough to feed both of them, with enough left over for me to sample, which I appreciated given my modest entrée. The vegetables were also a standout—perfectly cooked with a satisfying crispness. We capped off the evening with espresso martinis, thoughtfully mixed and served in chilled glasses. Both breakfast and dinner service were professional and attentive, but our dinner waitress stood out with her warm personality and witty banter—she was fantastic. Pricing felt reasonable for the quality and experience. Overall, The Tavern delivered a delightful dining experience, and we look forward...
Read moreWe had an early reservation due to our concert tickets for Oregon Symphony at 7:30. Upon walking in the hostess didn't address us, nor did she hurry to greet us. She disappeared on a mysterious mission. The bartender graciously went to find her for us and after walking past us twice she curtly said "I'll be right with you". When she did take us to our table she provided us with outdated menus. The server Sam was pleasant enough. He recommended the carrot appetizer. It was underwhelming. Texas toast and hard carrots in mustard, akin to mustard potato salad. Strange combo: bread with uncooked cubes of carrot. Main dishes: when the order was put in for my steak ...I asked for medium, it came back at minimum medium rare. Our server was difficult to flag down but he did return it to the kitchen and had them re cook and replate. Much better second time. My daughter asked for no cheese on salad (she's lactose intolerant) and that was forgotten too. On all our dishes the veggies were overly oily. My son enjoyed the salmon. For the price the food was disappointing, we didn't even order dessert. At the end of the day it's hotel food. Overly priced and overly touted in its descriptive Frenchified glory. I think this place is a better spot for drinks and lounging! Great...
Read moreMy visit to the Tavern at Heathman was not great this time around. I haven't been in a few years, but all my previous visits have been great.
This time, or server was wonderful and the best part of our experience.
The food was disappointing at best. The entrees were fine. The food took a very long time to come. Two of us ordered burgers, one was ordered without the carmalized onions. Neither burger had onions on it.
We ordered the meat and cheese plate as an appetizer and almost everything on it was moldy - all the cheeses and the patê had a layer of fuzzy mold and the brie was very discolored. It looked like it was very old. Our server took it back to the kitchen and the chef said it was fine to eat, but the cheese served to us was not supposed to be fuzzy so we declined. The server was very nice about the whole situation, but I was appalled by the kitchen's attitude about it.
The atmosphere was much louder and more frantic than I've seen before and I've been there during busier times. About 1/2 to 2/3 of the tables were full so they weren't slammed.
Overall, I was embarrassed that I had suggested it to my friends and felt I had to make excuses for such a poor experience. I wouldn't go again until I was assured that the kitchen issues have...
