I was really impressed with HopCityTavern. I would have never known about it if not for Open Table and Yelp. Tucked inside the Hilton Hotel kind of cafeteria style with a no nonsense sport bar atmosphere. It felt a little cold but it was clean and I appreciated the cloth napkins. We were greeted immediately which was easy because there were not a lot of people dining on a dreary Sunday night. Our server was excellent I appreciated the recommendations. We ordered well Gin and tonics which cost $8 each not bad for downtown. We started with appetizers deviled eggs $7 and sautéed asparagus $7 both delicious, hot and portions were generous. For dinner we chose the HopCity Burger $16 with american wagyu beef, sharp cheddar, caramelized onion, pickled jalapeno, heirloom tomatoes, arugula, pretzel bun, grain mustard aioli. The bun held the juicy burger together perfectly. We were not asked how we would like it cooked but that’s okay because it was cooked perfectly. Fries were served with the burger. If you love steak fries these you will love there we got a generous portion with a tasty seasoning. I would go back just for the fries! Now that we know about you this little gem we...
Read moreCame for Portland Dining Month and was not impressed. (Maybe because it was a Tuesday they did not anticipate a busy night?) I ordered the brussel sprouts, steak frites, and chocolate torte. The brussel sprouts were flavorful and crispy (and abundant), my steak however was one of the chewiest peices of meat I've ever had in a restaurant. Maybe it was because it sat under a heat lamp for 10 minutes before our server could be bothered to bring it to us. (My dining partner order the same thing and had a much more pleasant experience.) After my jaw ached from chewing, I finally gave up and waited another 10-15 minutes for our server to notice and another 10 minutes to get our desserts. We almost skipped dessert because we were going to be late to a show, but I'm glad we stayed, the donut bread pudding my partner ordered was really tasty. All in all, the service was slow and the food was mediocre. I kind if wish I had ordered differently, but I doubt that would have changed the...
Read moreI thought I’d group the photos this time. The guys are graduates & we get together when I’m in town. You’ll notice how HopCity is transformed during their breakfast buffet. Their pancakes are hand sized ONLY for the buffet but you can order normal sized ones from the menu. Yes I enjoy loads of thick crispy Oregon bacon-similar to English & Italian bacon. See that “cup” of ice cream-it’s 3full scoops of Alpine ice cream, locally made craft ice cream. There’s factory tours of their facility. HopCity has both craft & other types of beers & wines. If you’ve allergies like me, notify the wait staff, the chefs will do a great job of substitution to accommodate you. There’s even a gluten free toaster with a wait staff person reminding visitors not to use it with regular breads. There’s a variety of fruit juices, teas & coffees. I strongly recommend you trying Boyd’s Coffee at HopCity & elsewhere in Oregon. It thick rich non bitter coffee (also available in K-cup...
