Mike’s Calzones and Deli — Restaurant in Providence

Believe the hype, these calzones are NUTS!

On our way back from Portland, ME to good ol' New York City, we took a half-way stop on the always-awesome Thayer Street and cruised the pavement looking for some dinner. Reading all the Yelp love and thinking about my D.P. Dough experiences from college days, my friend and I popped in for a quick bite.

Overwhelmed by the awesome menu and selection of toppings, we were overjoyed to find out that we could split a single calzone into two different flavors, so we opted for 1/2 meat lover (pepperoni, sausage, meatball, bacon) and 1/2 buffalo chicken (needs no introduction). Our made-to-order calzone popped out about ten minutes later, sliced into four pieces, with a sprinkling of cheese baked right onto the top of the 'zone!

Sinking my teeth into this monstrosity was an experience up there with my first kiss...seriously. Gooey cheese, toppings aplenty, and a nice cup o' dunking sauce (blue cheese and marinara for each half) made this meal a force to be reckoned with. Me and my brother treat this place as a once a month excursion. The chicken shawarma is more than worth the 1hr20min ride it takes to get here. We always get one to eat in the car and one for the morning after. Everything about the wrap is superb. The garlic sauce and the spicy ketchup sauce dance million steps on your tongue. All the while the slow roasted chicken holds the entire flavor profile on its shoulders. The freshness of the onion, lettuce and tomatoe reels the sauces back. The fries (optional) are a must have tucked inside as they add substance to the whole thing. And the finale of the special pickles finishes the whole experience off with a snap and a little bit of spices / vinegar. There truly just isn't another place that does it quite like Mike's. 10/10 gotta get a third for later...

Tried it for the first time today. Ordered a buff chick calzone and some sides for pick up. When I got there, they didn’t have my order. They asked if I had called the right number. I told them I had, and told them what I ordered. They apologized and said they’d start working on it right away. I was pretty disappointed with the experience at that point, but then the food was ready in under 10 minutes, they gave my a complimentary fountain drink and apologized profusely. I was pleased by the time I left but wanted to wait until I had tried the food before making a final decision. The food was delicious. Not too greasy or heavy, and hit the spot. I will definitely return. They were kind and courteous, and if I hadn’t already paid beforehand and had any cash on me, I would’ve tipped more...
