Athens Tavern — Restaurant in Richmond

Wow, what can I say. The owner is a fabulous woman; her daughters are awesome as well. Beautiful personalities and are very friendly. A nice quaint atmosphere; great for lovebirds and a fun night out. I love the fact that she has real plants and flowers around the restaurant. Cozy lighting gives a relxed feeling. Now let's start with the appitizer Taramasalata: nice salty roe flavor with a light touch of cream cheese with warm pita chips. My daughter and I tried Octopus for the first time; it was very tender and tasty and well seasoned. She asked for seconds and thirds. The lamb chops were cooked medium well and very flavorful. I enjoyed the fact that I was able to taste the meat without sauces masking the flavor. I absolutely love lamb! They were lightly seasoned and grilled to perfection. Now for the fish, a nice meaty fish, light flavor with an awesome char on it. Dessert was a nice size piece of custard made with semolina topped with phylo dough with a sugar glaze over it. Recently started rediscovering this RVA classic. Such good Greek food here. Definitely won't be disappointed with the food. I had the souvlaki which was very flavorful and even better as leftovers the next day. The saganaki was also excellent.

Unfortunately, during my last visit, the service was 🤦🏼. Our server rarely came back to check on us or refill water. One time I look over at her (after spending minutes looking around and trying to look "needy") and she's at the bar counting her tips and shoving them into her purse 🙃 Could that not wait until the end of your shift?! We weren't even that close to closing time! The other server who was behind the bar must've had x-ray vision because she looked right through us repeatedly.

I've been here previously (recently) and the service was fine. That said, the reason I stopped going here 15yrs ago was due to the staff having a screaming match in the restaurant.

This is the spot. If you are looking for a romantic date night….this is your move. You want nice tasty food? Done. Their Greek food is top notch, they make the local favorite of Stella’s look like that run-down, gyros place you used to go to during your childhood, THIS PLACE MAKES STELLAS LOOK LIKE B-LIST EXPENSIVE TRASH!
