I’ve been putting off writing this review; not out of laziness or procrastination - although I CAN be lazy, and I DO sometimes procrastinate - but because, even though it’s a positive review, it’s still bittersweet for me.
You see, I love and eat a lot of steak; always filet, always medium rare, and always at places like Mastro’s, Del Frisco’s, Capital Grille, Gibson’s, et al lo. My wife and I drive more than a thousand miles a week, and we often dine out whenever we’re away from home.
In the last 12 months, I’ve easily had 100 filets mignon, and I started to make a list of my favorite places. The White Horse Tavern, in Newport, Rhode Island, has topped my list for more than six months; not only was my medium-rare filet cooked and seasoned to perfection, but the accompanying mashed potatoes were exquisite - nothing short of exquisite, I say!
…but then my wife and I had dinner at Duane’s Prime Steaks & Seafood during a brief stay at the Mission Inn in Riverside, California. We knew it was gonna be good - we don’t just blindly choose any ol’ steakhouse, she knows what she’s doing - but I had no idea their filet would make my Top 10 (let alone my Top Five), let alone the number one spot on my all-time favorite filets list!
When we finished, I requested to speak with the chef; I told him everything you just read here. I even refused dessert - I wanted the last taste in my mouth to be that filet. If you don’t often eat steak, go to Duane’s and you’ll have an amazing evening; but if you’re a (budding) steak connoisseur, you should still go to Duane’s, and it’ll still be an amazing evening.
On the off chance that anyone is interested, this is my Top 10 list:
Duane’s Prime Steaks & Seafood, the Mission Inn, Riverside, CA The White Horse Tavern, Newport, RI Mastro’s, NYC Del Frisco’s, NYC Capital Grill, Baltimore, MD Cedric’s Tavern, The Biltmore, Asheville, NC Gibson’s Steakhouse, Chicago, IL Harry Caray’s Steakhouse, Chicago, IL Gibson’s Steakhouse, Chicago, IL Tango...

Read moreHold on for this story! Allergic reaction, aggressive hostesses, It just gets weirder! Been here many times. We used to dress up but when you get there most people look like the just arrived from Disney Land. T-shirts and jeans. So imagine our surprise when my son-in-law and I were told that we couldn’t come in to the restaurant with reservations because my son-in-law had on his $250 pair of shorts and his hundred dollar flip-flops with a collared sport shirt. It’s Southern California remember it’s 108° yesterday in Riverside I think which is a very bad area where this restaurant is located in the Mission Inn aggressive homeless so there’s that. He agreed to wear the hotel pants! size 35 pants while he has a size 32 waist. They didn’t want to let him in because he wore flip-flops but of course there were two people sitting in the restaurant currently wearing flip-flops. Next he inform them that he has a shellfish allergy and to please not let that get in his food. He ordered French onion soup. They brought him lobster bisque mistakenly so he ate it thinking it was the soup he ordered. Anaphylactic shock would’ve sent us to the hospital and ruin the night-he spit it out we called everyone over it was a huge scene because we just wanted a Benadryl to try to get the swelling out -they refused. finally he got something like a Benadryl and we were able to get our steaks which were good like we cook them at home everything was kind of bland service was acceptable then we got the bill… well at least they didn’t charge him for the soup. $320! It was not even close to that kind of a restaurant it’s like putting on lipstick on a pig this is Riverside California right next to the freeway the management handled it poorly it’s really too bad my son-in-law is not the kind of guy to sue them. It was that horrific. I will never go there again what an over priced theme park. Good for people that don’t know what a nice restaurant is; a poor person‘s idea of a...
