We happened upon Holy Cannolis while walking down main street in Rochester. The store is bright and cheerful, and Tim is very welcoming.
But you came to learn about the cannolis, right?
We're from Princeton, NJ, with strong Italian-American roots in the NY Metro area. Like most of our ilk, we would consider ourselves connoisseurs of cannolis because you can't have a special occasion or treat otherwise.
I was chatting with Tim about their process, and enjoyed learning about his family's history back to Sicily where the mother-in-law learned all the "insider's tips". Right off, my Italian-American radar, said "authentic"!
Tim had said he had freshly made five varieties. My daughter had a cappuccino, and I ordered a raspberry. A key part of this process, was watching Tim fill the cannoli shell on the the spot. This is important for me knowing that they weren't pre-made in some manufacturing process elsewhere; this is more common than you'd think!
Our discerning taste buds were ready, and they exploded with "Wow!" The cannoli shell was perfectly done and crisp, and it was flavorful itself. (For me, a necessary precondition. Like pizza, if the crust isn't top notch, the toppings don't matter. Note: NJ-ites also consider themselves connoisseurs of pizza too!))
Then, the filling must carry the show. The raspberry flavor was prominent, and the filling smooth and perfectly sweet.
Really, for cannoli lovers, this is a must stop. And, at $4 per cannoli, it's a good price for any gathering.
Thank you, Tim, for...
Read moreWhile waiting for the shop to open, my wife and I were sitting on a parking spot right outside the shop (it's cold out in not standing outside). 15 mins after the posted opening time a short haired lady comes to the door, sees my wife and I sitting in the car and refused to unlock the shop door. Curiously she shuffles back further into the shop not willing to open it (me not willing to get out of the car in 20° weather) and stand there like a derp. She finally comes out (reluctantly I might add) approached my vehicle as if to ask what my business was so I rolled down my window and explained to her that I was waiting for her shop to open. She then gave me a sideways look not taking her eyes off me and proceeded to sculk back into the shop. Forgot to mention I'm not fully Caucasian so there's where my problem coincides. Needless to say my wife and I did not enter the shop in fact immediately drove away and found ourselves down the street at desert Oasis which...
Read moreAmazing, honestly. Saw this place while looking for a good place to grab something sweet after a day at the beach. My wife suggested this spot because of the reviews. I'm glad she did. The Nice gentleman working the counter was quick to greet us an let us know how it worked there. They make multiple fillings and today they had 5. They all sounded temptingly good. We got traditional fillings with the chocolate added and one raspberry. He even offered to add some extra pecans at the ends for no extra charge. :) Both Amazing! Tried a bite soon as we got into the car an ate my three on the way home. That's just how good. The shop was really sweetly decorated lots of fun things to look at whole you wait for them to fill the fresh home made shells. They were just the right amount of crunch and the filling was generous. We certainly be...
