Cantina Taco — Restaurant in Rockford Township

The only good thing I have to say about this place is the atmosphere is nice. I used to love this place, it was my fave local food joint. In the last 4-5 months, customer service has gone straight down. It feels like they dont want to be working there. There used to be two cashiers I loved talking to, a short haired girl and blond girl, but the blond one is gone and I hardly ever see the other one, the ones I see just seem miserable and on their phones, act as if I'm interrupting them. In the last 6 months, food quality has gone down. They changed their staff and quality just went down down down. When I order the Spanish Rice, it's almost always very obviously rancid. It STINKS. When I say something, they offer a replacement of a different kind, and that's all they do. No refund for getting rotten food, no talking to staff about it, nothing else. The red salsa tastes like it comes out of a can now, it used to be delicious now it's bland. The steak is also usually rancid, so I opt for chicken, but even that has had a weird taste lately. It feels like when I come in they don't want me to order. Maybe it's bad timing on my part? I'm not sure, I never come more than 30 minutes before close and they act like I came at with 1 min to spare! So, i usually order online with my roommates, who now won't even eat the food from there because we have received rotten rice so often, so I just haven't been back in a few weeks. Their chips and queso is always good at least... I kept trying because I loved it so much but I think I'll have to give it up now. Unfortunate. Hopefully things turn...

Our family firmly believes in supporting local businesses and we've been a Cantina Taco customer since we first visited their downtown location years ago. Unfortunately, we ordered online last night and had a horrible experience. Their online ordering is through DoorDash and, conveniently, they have an order again button. I used that and, according to the receipt, the order went through exactly like last time. When we went to pick it up, they couldn't find the order, which has happened numerous times. Turns out it was sitting on the counter for the entire 10 minutes I was standing there. They just didn't see it. They copped an attitude about the situation, which put me in a bad mood about the experience. Then I got home and our order was made incorrectly. I called up there and the person on the phone was incredibly rude, saying that I should have just dined in or put my order in correctly (which we did) and refused to do anything to make it right. When we went back up there they again copped an attitude and tried to put all the blame on us. We told them they were either giving us our money back or remaking it. They called the manager and eventually remade it. The entire time we were polite, but firm. We didn't get belligerent, scream, yell, cuss, or call names. We didn't earn the attitude we got from the workers. Had the workers been polite about literally any aspect of our interactions we would consider coming back. This was our first time visiting this location. Staff was very friendly and helpful working through the menu. They have a lot of options to customize your meal choice. Service was fast and the toppings and extras came out fresh. I tried 4 tacos with flour shells - Beef, Shrimp, Chicken and Carnitas with their green sauce. My wife got a chicken quesadilla and asked for sour cream, lettuce and Pico de Gallo. We also shared some nachos and queso.

The tacos were good overall, nothing I would consider special, and I wouldn't get the beef or chicken again. I enjoyed the carnitas the most, with the pork being tender, but still lacking some seasoning. The shrimp was ok and made for an ok taco. The chicken had an unusual texture that reminded me of canned chicken, flavor was ok. The beef was fairly tender, but I couldn't get away from it tasting very similar to beef jerky. The chips were good.

My wife enjoyed their quesadilla. Her only complaint was that they offered the extras to add to it, but they don't put them on the quesadilla directly, so it's awkward tearing it open to add in a few more items you wanted.

I would visit this place again, but it hasn't become my go to...
