While seated two doors down, I had an hour to look around my surroundings while waiting for our food. I noticed the word "Pastry" underneath an umbrella and decided to google it first. Astoria, google said, closes at midnight. I've never heard of a pastry shop closing late, so was curious and went to check it out while still waiting for my food at Ale Mary's (be sure to check out my review of that restaurant).
Upon entering, it was beautiful as a pastry shop should be. All the pastries lit in warm lighting and tantalizing behind glass. There must have been a staff meeting as they were all in the back - I could see them as the wall was glass. I didn't need help, but a gentleman came to the counter a few minutes later to ask if we needed help. Nope - all good, we'll be back we told him.
And we did come back - we came back after our meal, and so did everyone else. The place was packed to the door. The service was pretty quick, considering how busy it was. The same older gentleman helped me. As another review pointed out, not super friendly, but helpful. I took home $60 worth of pastries and don't regret a single thing. I had an eclair this morning 😋
The gentleman said that they remain that busy right up until midnight. So if you are in the area, and want some sweets, it's open...
Read moreOkay I’ve been a loyal customer for way too long! I’ve been going to this place for their coconut beignets for ages only because those are my comfort dessert. But let’s be real, their desserts are far from being the best!
To make matters worse, the staff are beyond rude. An absolute nightmare!!! They act like you're imposing on their personal time. It feels like they're doing everyone a favor by even acknowledging your existence. They act like you’re inconveniencing them by simply existing. Trying to get a smile out of them is like wishing for a unicorn. It’s giving like you’re intruding — Like okay I came to buy some of your desserts to make your business run so that YOU CAN GET PAID, like HELLO ??!!!— Plus, they clearly know nothing about their products. When I ask about a dessert, they just parrot back the name like I’m an idiot.
I’ve been patiently waiting for an improvement, but it’s actually gotten worse.
To top it all off, the last time I ordered, my dessert box was wrapped so poorly it looked like a five-year-old did it. I’m done. This place is a complete disaster.
Avoid it at all cost!!! I’m not...
Read moreWe had a really disappointing experience during our visit. The times listed online didn’t match what we were told over the phone or in person. The website says they close at 11pm, and when we called, they confirmed they closed at 11pm. We arrived at 10:45, thinking we were still within a reasonable time — but the attitude we received was unnecessarily rude and dismissive.
A staff member named Glynn was especially condescending when we asked about the closing time. What stood out was how polite and helpful the tone was over the phone, compared to how we were treated in person. It honestly felt like we were being judged — possibly even discriminated against — as we are Mexican. While I can't say for sure that was the reason, it certainly felt that way given the drastic shift in behavior.
Glynn ended up ignoring us completely after the initial interaction, which made the experience even more uncomfortable.
We expected better and left feeling unwelcome. It’s really unfortunate when a business fails to treat people with...
