The food is great but, standing in line for 40 minutes and then being told that you can only order to go because I'm trying to ridiculous when no service was rendered, ridiculousness.
Okay, I'm coming back to edit my review.
Initially, I gave it five stars for the quality of food. Now that I've actually eaten the food after waiting almost an hour in line to order it and then receive it, I'm giving it one star.
My wife and I both had the sweet potato fries. We both agree that they were greasy and nasty. Improper temperature of the grease can contribute to this, just a note for the owner.
My wife had the iconic burger and it was so overloaded with sauce so is to be inedible. Just dripping with the trashy nasty sauce.
I got the Yucatan burger and had high hopes! But, the patty was significantly smaller than the bun leading to finishing my burger and having at least a third of the bun left. In addition, there was nothing special about it at all. Nothing that would warrant waiting in line that long.
My wife had the chocolate milkshake with cheesecake add-in. Neither she nor I could taste any cheesecake in it. So, fail.
I had the chocolate Lovers milkshake with strawberries added in. I'm pretty sure some strawberries were actually put in there because I got a few strawberry seeds but, no strawberry flavor. Here's a pro tip for if you're making a specialty milkshake, don't blend it to the point that none of the add-ins can be discerned from the rest of the body of the milkshake. Again, fail.
All in all, neither of us finished anything that we bought because of the subpar quality. I was excited because of all the hype and figured that the long line was due to extremely high quality food. I was sorely disappointed.
I have to think one of two things, either the good people of St George have never had good food and so they're excited about this mediocre offering, or.... Well, I can't think of any other reason there'd be so much hype over the trash served at Morty's Cafe.
I forgot to talk about the "ambience"! If you're into a dining experience that includes a crowded room full of people screaming at the top of their lungs so that they can be heard over the other people crowded in screaming over the top of their lungs, then this is the place for you! Seriously, a little bit of sound dampening would...
Read moreNew update. Just tried their Hawaiian burger... This place is exceptional. So back to 5 star... Just a wonderful experience and truly top 5 restaurants in this town. UPDATE - orig review below.. Sorry folks... call it a happy accident. Morty's does not have a Philly Cheesesteak on their menu. I ordered a customized version apparently when I first went there.. On the menu is a Philly hamburger... Will not be reviewing burgers. But according to restaurant you can order a Philly steak sandwich... not sure of pricing.. So 5 star = 4 star.. as it is a hidden item and thus disqualified from competition. But hey review below does still stand. Glad I went back and discovered my error.
Quest for the Holy Grail of Philly Cheesesteaks.... continues... (sounds like a Monty Python skit... I know...) Ok... one word - "Brilliant"... Quality of meat was exceptional. I repeat ~ exceptional... Forgot to ask for extra mayo- but no problem - Aioli? Not sure of spelling - but essentially they use a garlic mayo - and it was delicious. The sandwich was not in a traditional hoagie, rather a large circular bun. Not complaining as it complimented everything perfectly. Yes they have pretty good fries and the service I experienced was impeccable, warm, and friendly. Solid 5 stars and a top contender without a doubt. Ate outside in the shade... a little cool today, but felt like being in Boston or Philly in early spring. This sandwich was just exceptionally delicious. Did I find the Philly Grail castle? Jury is out - got some more places to go... but after 3 phillys this week I need to take an extended break and go to the gym ..lol.. Almost forgot .... For this quality the price point was great. Although I did not eat indoors, the ambience of this place has a cozy classic feel, kind of like the Bearpaw Cafe that's been around these parts...
Read moreMorty's is a great local dining option with American dine-in/fast food fare but also has a lot of great healthy, vegan, and vegetarian options. One of their most popular dishes are their Quinoa salad bowls which are all excellent! They also have some vegetarian sandwiches and burger options. I am a big fan of their Portobello burger! The mushroom is seasoned and marinated and so it's super tender and juicy! A few other tasty items on the menu are their sweet potato fries that they make in-house, Yucatan burger for a little more spicy option, and the Philly cheese steak burger. All of those are great options! The bun is big and fluffy, no sesame seeds which I prefer and then they burgers are a thicker 1/4 beef patty which is cooked on a flat top and has a nice crisp on the outside but is still nice and juicy. Definitely put this on your list to check out if you want to try a good local burger/sandwich joint that makes most their items all homemade in the restaurant.
They do also serve breakfast and their prices seem to be very competitive, but I actually haven't had this from them mainly because they don't start serving it until 10am? Kind of odd, and then they do serve coffee drinks. I feel like I would go into get breakfast if they started serving earlier breakfast? I'll have to ask the reason for this the next time I'm in. I believe they do serve breakfast...
