We visited a week ago after all mask mandates had been rescinded by the Governor. We were pleasantly surprised when Brian, who was greeting guests walking in, said it wouldn’t be a problem for us because we don’t wear masks and that they were still requiring them inside the building where you ordered. He walked up to the small window and asked the bartender to get us drinks, swiped our credit card, and we were on our way. I walked back, got a second drink and cashed out. He even took my credit card slip back to where we were sitting. I told him that the way he handled our situation was just amazing. There are a million reasons why someone doesn’t wear a mask and he didn’t care, he didn’t judge, he just took care of us. On a Facebook group I belong to with over 2K local members, I mentioned what a great experience we had. Don’t underestimate how amazing he handled the situation. This pandemic won’t last forever and how businesses handle themselves during it will determine who will remain their customers when it’s over. As a former restaurant and wine bar owner, I could never afford to say I don’t need every single one of my customers. That would be arrogant and fiscally stupid as a small business owner to think it, let alone breed it as a work culture ideology.

Fast forward to this past weekend when another employee at the entrance said not only could we not go inside without a mask but refused to order anything for us from the outside window. He briefly talked to bartender inside who told him they don’t do that. I walked to the window and the bartender refused to walk closer to talk to me. She yelled to me from about 10’ away that it wasn’t their policy or at least I think that’s what she said because she was so far away and wearing a mask. She did walk over to slam the window closed on us. This was pretty late, there wasn’t a line inside. I walked inside to talk to her since she slammed the window closed on me. I explained how nice the employee was who helped us last weekend and they said he quit that day. They said his name was Patrick. I couldn’t remember his name at the moment but that didn’t ring a bell. Whether or not an employee quit shouldn’t affect policies, but okay. She essentially came right out and said “we don’t need your business” so we don’t have to do anything for you if you refuse to wear a mask. The employee at the door attempted to get a chant going with customers calling me “a$$hole, a$$hole, a$$hole” and pointing at me. Other patrons said, “this is their business, they can do what they like” and I agree. I responded that sometimes absurd rules need to be addressed. But do you understand the whiplash we were experiencing when one instance an employee was so great and accommodating but then the very next weekend other employees are shaming us and actively BULLYING us? They threatened to call the police and we said fine. We didn’t want anything from you or your business at that point except to tell you how unreasonable everything was. The effort it took NOT to help us took far more effort than to just help us. I said I could have ordered 10 beers in the time we were arguing about policies.

The mean female bartender who slammed the window on me said a few employees still weren’t vaccinated so that’s why they’re still requiring masks. I said, “great, then have those employees wear masks”. The assumption that everyone walking around is a cesspool of virus is quite frankly, a shame and perpetuates the fear mongering and villainization that everyone is about to infect others at any given moment. Even the flip-flopping CDC has maintained that a sustained close contact is necessary in order to contract the virus. That’s not happening ordering a beer at the bar, it’s just not.
