LUNCH REVIEW HUGE Portions, good prices. Consider that this was on a weekend in October. On our first trip to Salem, our girlfriend and I wanted to go on a weekend in October because of all the Halloween events happening. What we didn't really internalize until we got there was how PACKED it was going to be. This city is tiny and is not built to accommodate the sheer number of people who come in on weekends in October. It took 45 minutes to finally park. Take the train if you can. I say all this because like Salem, the Howling Wolf was PACKED. When we initially arrived, they quoted us a 1 hour and 45-minute wait. We went back after finding parking and they seated us immediately which was a nice surprise. This probably wouldn't be your experience if you go on a random weekend so take what I say with a grain of salt. I asked the waiter what the biggest thing on the menu was as I was HUNGRY and one of the things he said was the fajitas...and he was not wrong. Look at the picture below. A full plate of sizzling steak, onions, and peppers and then another full plate of rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, and pico de gallo. For $15, that's one heck of a deal! The food wasn't the best Mexican I've ever had but it was good and there was a lot of it. That's what you want at a Tex-Mex type place like this. One negative that I need to call out...the bathroom situation. There are only 2 individual bathrooms for the entire restaurant. When I went, there was a line of 6 people and I had to wait 10 minutes which really interrupted my meal. When my girlfriend went to go wash her hands, there were 10 people in line and she had to wait even longer. I will admit that it was a busy day but this was a really big negative to the experience at the restaurant. Overall, great experience! Maybe go to the bathroom elsewhere though.

Having been a long while since eating at such an establishment in downtown Salem, I had made plans to meet a friend for lunch. Well, communication was screwed up and I was by my wee little one-some. But no matter! I hunkered down for a margarita and burrito. The place filled up fairly quickly at time of opening. The staff were polite and food service was quick (like, 5 minutes from time of order to sittin-in-front-of-me-insane quick). The Howling Wolf Burrito was rice, cheese, pinto beans, and carne deshebrada (shredded beef) with christmas chili sauce and chili con queso smothering this monster. Never fear, as a certain YouTube personality, Babish says: "This meal has joined the clean plate club." I didn't want to eat the rest of the day after this meal, but I was meeting a friend for some Back Alley later on and trust me, I soldiered on. But the meal was delicious, filling, and completed the day. And we barely hit noon. House margarita was served in a high ball glass instead of a margarita glass, but there was salt on the rim and I lack the class to be concerned with such frivolous, superficial 'faux pas.' The only question is thus: "was it good?" and I found the drink a little 'meh' to actually a little salty (even when drinking by straw and not by rim), but otherwise smooth and refreshing. Overall despite the social setback, it was a brilliant lunch that brightened the day, despite the on-coming thunderstorms.

Convenient tourist location. Parking is challenging. Metered parking on the street is the only option. The restaurant doesn't have a parking lot. The restaurant decor is cute. Seating inside is table and chairs or high-tops with stools. Outside has some seating facing the street. Full service bar. It's loud due to hard floors and solid walls with no sound control paneling or material, carpeting. There are two handicap accessible family (both genders) bathrooms. The one I used needed attention. It smelled like stale urine, the toilet needed wiping. The food: overall - ok. The biggest disappointment was the salsa. It was a smooth blended tomato sauce with very little mexican salsa flavors. The guacamole was underwhelming. It lacked salt, had cubed tomatoes blended in and was not flavorful. The tortilla chips were good. The shrimp burrito was also not full of flavor. The fried avocado taco was decent but spicy. The chicken fajita was good with plenty of fixings. The water is tap water and tasted like chlorine despite being served in a fancy glass bottle with a clasped stopper. The iced tea was supposed to be plain tea but a faint fruit (raspberry?) tea flavor was detected as if the tank used was previously for a fruit tea but was now being used for plain tea. The limeade was very good. Attaching photos.

Stopped in on a short visit to the area. Margaritas at the bar were decent & well prepared (we got the Jalapeño & Blue something or other). Moved outside seats on the patio, facing the street. Guacamole was a terrible flavorless green goop with almost no visible onion, tomato, cilantro or jalapeño. Looked straight out of the supermarket deli case. Avoid. House margaritas were ok at best. Nothing to write about. But they were cheap. My wife's shrimp taco came with shrimp that looked boiled straight out of a bag. I guess we were expecting something actually grilled on site. Appears to not be the case. My Al Pastor Quesadilla was actually pretty tasty although there were chunks of inedible chewy fat I had to spit out as well as some bone or overcook pieces that all went into a napkin. The staff was very friendly and clearly busy. I wouldn't come back here in the future. It's just not that special.

The atmosphere and service are good. There are no issues there. Seated quickly. Served quickly. Chips and salsa included. Ordered the queso con Carne as an appetizer. Good consistency. Lots of ground beef. Best part of the meal. Also got chicken fajitas to split. The portions are quite large, so two people can definitely share one order. Comes with your choice of bean and yellow rice with sour cream, lettuce, Pico de Gallo, and cheese. The presentation looks nice. Colorful. However, taste is lacking. The chicken was bland, no flavor, and the veggies were undercooked. The bell peppers were crunchy. I requested lime, salt, and pepper to try and up the flavor. Lime helped, but we ended up leaving half the plate. Maybe they were having an off day or other items in their menu are better, but I was not impressed.

This place is cool... just wish it had a different vibe. So much potential to but it kinda lacking in the decorations/vibe... it's kinda small. Service... it was ok.. we were left with our drinks empty alot of the time. The food is different than most places.. I ordered the Pollo con chorizo... I asked for no jalapeños and everything else was ok. When I got my food It was with no chorizo because the waitress told me the jalapeños are mixed in with it. I wish I had known. I thought it would be Chopped chicken like fajitas but I got a full chicken breast with cheese over it... make no mistakes thou.... it was amazing even thou I had to cut it myself the food was good. We also had the blood bag.. delicious... vodka with raspberry 😋 😍 all in all there are some things I would Change but I would definitely go back.
