Ahhh, Hatch. We live far away now, so it's not quite as easy to drop by as it used to be. It takes around 45 minutes to make it there from where we live now, but I've loved this place for many, many years now, so we still make the trek occasionally. I've often said that Hatch and places like it (that is, local businesses with flavor - pun not necessarily intended, but not necessarily not intended either) are what make SLC cool, and I always look forward to the chance to go to Hatch. All that said, I'm so disappointed with my last visit that it kinda ruined my day, I'm sorry to say.
That night, I ordered a single scoop of ice cream in a waffle cone. When my guy was scooping my ice cream, I noticed that he only had one glove on. The glove was on the hand that was scooping the ice cream, which means... Yeah, he was holding onto the cone with his bare hand. Naturally, he did the same thing with my partner's ice cream cone. I should have said something, but I didn't want to be rude or embarrass the employee, so I asked for two cups instead. Then, I looked around and noticed that three out of the four employees working just then only had one glove on, which means that if you ordered ice cream that night, there's a high likelihood that your ice cream cone was handled with a bare hand. After I noticed the situation, I watched for a while and I'm sorry to say that the entire time we were in the shop, I didn't see any employee change their glove or wash their hands, even after helping other customers, handling equipment, or going outside. I seriously doubt this is policy, but this is not a good look and suggests that these particular employees don't see a problem with handling food with their bare hands. Itâs frustrating to see that these employees either havenât received food safety training, or that they have received that training and just donât care enough to follow it.
We threw the cones away, went to the car, and ate our ice cream out of the cups in disbelief. The ice cream was great, as we've come to expect. Considering the prices at Hatch, which are premium, and how long it takes us to get there, it's the understatement of the century to say that this experience was a massive disappointment. As dumb as it must sound, I feel a little...
Read moreAs a kid I always wanted to drink melted chocolate. This desire came mostly from melted Hersheyâs bars; the ones Iâd accidentally leave in my parentâs car during the summertimeâs blistering heat. Iâd pick up the package and itâd slag and droop under the weight of such distilled decadence. As kids do, Iâd entertain myself by flipping the rectangle back and forth; itâd slosh the pure liquid fat and sugar around, and Iâd think to myself: "whatâd it taste like if, right now, I guzzled it like water?" But alas I never did such a thing, as I knew better than to provoke the wrath of my parents for such an activity would make one fine mess.
I was very apprehensive about trying the hot chocolate here because Iâve never been a hot chocolate fan. Iâve hated everything from Swiss Miss, to hot chocolate from vendors, to even to a simple homemade hot chocolate of milk, sugar, and coco powder. Every time the flavor is nothing more than hot water and a hint of chocolate, quite disgusting if you ask me. Sure the hot chocolate reviews here are stellar, but reviews have failed me before. I was not disappointed! â¤ď¸
Hatch Family Chocolates serves up some of the best hot chocolate I have ever had! Itâs like my childhood fantasy has come to life but better! Their hot chocolate truly is like a cup of pure liquid chocolate. đ Thank you for making such a magnificent treat for visitors, youâve earned yourself a life...
Read moreI can't believe that I have not reviewed this place yet. This place is a must visit. We always let our friends know of this place, and take guests here when they come to visit from other places not nearby.
We love their hot chocolate. We come from Sandy just for that. It's a thicker chocolate, and it tastes so good. We get cravings for it all of the time.
Their minature chocolates are great too. They have a wide assortment of them. We usually grab a few pieces whenever we have something to celebrate.
They also have these chocolate pie thingys that are real good. I would highly recommend those. Sorry I do not remember the name. They are in small pie tins. They are a must.
The owners are really nice. As an example, my boy wanted two flavors for a single scoop of ice cream. I was going to let my boy know they would need to do two scoops, and for now we are only doing one. The owner said his scooper was super talented, and he got two flavors with the size of one scoop. My boy was so thrilled.
The rest of the staff is great too. They always have smiles, and are always willing to help out. They are also consistent with the quality of the food like the hot chocolate. We have never had a bad time.
I would highly recommend this place. The chocolates are great for yourself, family, or whenever you need to give a...
