Avenues Proper — Restaurant in Salt Lake City

Very disappointing experience all around. My wife and I have wanted to try this restaurant for a while - we got back in town New Years day and had a limited number of options to choose from for a dinner reservation for that night. There was one left here so we jumped on it. The atmosphere is what you'd expect, and not disappointing. The food however, is way over priced for what we got. We followed our servers recommendation, which turned out to be a plate of french fries covered in cheese and gravy, it wasn't bad, just more what you'd expect from a bar that just decided to server food on the side. For dinner we had the steak, I asked for medium rare, and my wife asked for medium. We eat steak on a regular basis, and purple and bloody isn't medium rare and especially not medium. I was going to wait for the waitress to come back but no one walked by us for long enough that the steaks started to get cold so we just ate what we could. They were served with another side of french fries, which you think the waitress would have thought to ask if we wanted to more fries since our appetizer was fries as well. Obviously we didn't eat any of them. After dropping off the entree we didn't see the waitress until she brought the bill. I understand that it's New Years and maybe she didn't want to be there - but I still had to pay $90 for two undercooked steaks, and a boat load of fries and terrible service. Okay so we tried to go to Avenue’s Proper three times & finally got in!!! No wait on a Thursday night, which was fortunate. We sat on the bar side. Our waitress was great, very helpful & attentive. We tried a few cocktails: The Proper Daily & the Pomegranate Margarita. Both were really good! I always love me a good margarita! We grabbed two appetizers, the Pommes Frites (basics fries) with the best proper beer aioli sauce!! It was delicious! We also tried the brussel sprouts. For some reason in my head, these were not going to be shredded, even though the menu is clear that they are. The dried cherries were a great touch to this appetizer. Food wise, I didn’t feel like they had great vegetarian options except like a veggie burger or a salad. I ended up getting the carbonara pasta, minus the bacon. The pepper was really strong & overwhelming for me with this dish. My friend wanted salmon but with Valentine’s Day a few days before we went, they were fresh out of both the fish & chips & the Atlantic salmon option so he opted for the chicken & waffles which ended up being really good. We celebrated my boyfriend's 30th birthday at Avenues Proper and had the best experience! I rarely do Google Reviews but this experience truly deserves 5 stars. Here are some reasons as to why:

The brussels sprouts are some of the best in SLC (and I am VERY picky when it comes to brussels). The food and coffee is locally sourced, the drink menu has a variety of fun cocktails (my faves are the Lavender Haze and El Diablo), and plentiful beers on tap (most of which are micro-brewed in-house). Renting out the bar area is the PERFECT size for a party of 18-25 people. I have been vegetarian for over 10 years and am always researching vegetarian options in SLC - the brussels sprouts, cauliflower, arugula salad, and veggie burger were my faves on the menu. The arugula salad in particular blew me away! Very well-dressed (but not overly dressed), the beets were very fresh, and a large helping was served. They definitely offer a variety of food options for all pallets and diets! The cozy but upscale atmosphere is as immaculate as the service and food. The service was quick and they catered to many special requests, including helping us serve cake and provide extra plates and silverware. I really can't think of a better location in Salt Lake to celebrate a special day with our closest friends and family.
