I have been going to Sugarhouse Coffee consistently for about a year. Today, I got the breakfast burrito which is $8.25 which is advertised as 3 eggs and meat or veggies along with two protein bites, a Peruvian cookie, and a mocha. All of the items I immediately received were good as well as the mocha. When I received my breakfast burrito, it was skimpy. The first bite was good, the second was nothing but a mouthful of tortilla. A three egg burrito should have fillings in each bite, especially for $8.25. I went to ask to have the burrito remade because it was skimpy. To their credit, the employees did remake the burrito for me which I appreciate. I got full and requested a small to-go box so I could eat the rest of my burrito later. I was then told by an employee that they lost money on the order so I could not have a small to-go box. I then said I should not be punished for them being skimpy with the ingredients they placed in my burrito. There were bigger to-go boxes on the condiments table which I opted for even though I was trying to reduce my waste. I put everything left over inside and as I walked out, I stopped to say, “I want you to know that I have been coming to Sugarhouse Coffee at least twice a week for a while and I will not be coming back for at least one maybe two years. I should not be punished for my burrito being skimpy.” I’m not sure if it was the manager or the owner who then chimed in and said, “good luck to you” to which I replied, “I will not be coming back”. They then said “we lost money on your order. We pay $1 per egg and so we lost a bunch of money on you.” I then said, “you all are not hurting for money” and I left. The ridiculous thing about this is that Harmons eggs are about $6 for a dozen which comes out to $.50 per egg. Since Sugarhouse Coffee is a business, they get these for a bulk price, meaning they pay less. Even if they did happen to use a total of 6 eggs on me with Harmons egg prices, that only equals $3. Plus, it is not the fault of a customer that a service employee did not make a breakfast burrito without being skimpy. On the contrary, it is the job of a business to make a customer happy by making the food received worth the money paid. Also, am I being punished for not being a member of the ‘clean plate club’? I thought we were adults and can listen to constructive feedback. I thought I was within my right to stop eating when I am full. I worry for myself and future customers of Sugarhouse Coffee. Do they single folks out who speak their mind? I thought Sugarhouse Coffee was ‘safe place where everyone can share their story’. Does this only extend to those who conform? Does this extend only to those who are rich? Does this extend only to those who push down their concerns? I doubt the sincerity of Sugarhouse Coffee and I would highly recommend considering other gathering places that will listen and sincerely care about customers. I will be getting my coffee at other gathering places that live up to open minded values. I want to go to a place that chooses to go high rather than low, even when the level of discomfort between customer and...
Read moreI was sorely disappointed with my first and abruptly quick visit to Sugar House Coffee. For an establishment that prides themselves so much on inclusivity and “providing a space where everyone is welcome and all are seen”, my experience was the exact opposite. I was told by a woman working behind the counter that animals were not allowed inside, which I can completely understand. After explaining to the woman that my dog is a service animal, she rolled her eyes and shook her head towards another female staff member that was laughing at me and my dog. This occurred in front of several other patrons in line and inside the coffee shop. The entire encounter was so humiliating, I left without placing my order. On my way out, the woman looked at me and I explained to her that I did not appreciate the way she had treated me. She looked down and refused to make eye contact with me or acknowledge her actions or my complaint. The treatment I received from the staff members there was certainly not aligned with an inclusive and welcoming environment for all…
Edit in response to owner’s response: Just because I allowed a little girl in the parking lot to pet my service animal, after she politely asked to pet him, does not mean he was not working or servicing me while inside your establishment. I am not sure what the other man in your shop or his distracted service animal has anything to do with me or my service animal? The service dog trainer on your team that you are referencing is the exact staff member that acted inappropriately and made us feel unwelcome. I may be misunderstanding here, but it feels like by asking me and my service animal to be a better example, you are insinuating we did something wrong in this situation. And that is simply...
Read moreThis place is like a second home to my partner and I. We own an online business and this is our top pick for places to work. The indoor seating area is absolutely wonderful, and I'm excited for the day it can open back up. Until then, we'll continue bringing our car inverter and working from one of their picnic tables.
Regarding atmosphere - it's very inclusive and eclectic. A lot of regulars, and much of their clientele seems to be young higher class college kids. Their is art on the walls and messages of equality all around. They used to do a local music night. I imagine they will again eventually. It was my favorite time to be there.
The drinks are the best. They serve the only white mocha that doesn't make me puke. Not sure why, but coffee drinks from box coffee shops have made me ill over the last few years. I assume the difference is their coffee supplier - they're a strong voice for the importance of buying local, and their coffee beans come from a local source. They make it virtually the same as any other shop (milk, coffee, Ghirardelli white chocolate mix) but it tastes so much better.
The people here are amazing. My partner and I have been daytime regulars for quite some time, and the staff rarely changes. We don't really talk to them outside of the ordering process, but I've grown to care for them. They're genuinely good people. I've also never met the owner, but she's there frequently, and you can tell that she cares deeply for this place and the people inside it. It's one of the few places I feel really good about giving...
