The Soup Kitchen in Sugar House: Salt Lake City’s Bowl of Soul

Tucked into the cozy heart of Sugar House, the Soup Kitchen isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a ritual. For those in the know, it’s the kind of place that doesn’t need flashy signs or five-star hype. It quietly delivers something far more valuable: comfort, consistency, and a reminder that the best things in life are often the simplest.

If you’ve never been, make no mistake—this is a must-visit stop every time you find yourself in Salt Lake City. And if you have been, chances are you’re already hooked. For me, it’s been a near-daily destination for as long as I can remember, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A Staple in the Purest Sense

The Soup Kitchen isn’t trendy—it’s timeless. No matter what’s going on in the world outside, inside you’ll find warm, familiar aromas and a staff that treats you like you’ve been family for years (because let’s face it—you probably have). The menu is comforting without being boring. From rich, creamy chowders to hearty vegetable stews and signature sandwiches, everything is made to nourish both stomach and spirit.

Comfort Food, Elevated by Heart

This isn’t just food. It’s what your grandma would’ve made if she ran a low-key diner and had a secret handshake with every local in town. There’s a reason people keep coming back. It’s not just the soup (which, let’s be honest, could win awards for its soul-soothing goodness)—it’s the feeling. The Soup Kitchen feels like home, even if you’re just passing through.

Whether you’re a local needing a reliable lunch spot or a visitor on the hunt for authentic SLC flavor, the Soup Kitchen delivers every single time. No pretension. Just ladle after ladle of the most wholesome, honest food you’ll ever taste.

Why You Need to Go

If Salt Lake City had a culinary time capsule, the Soup Kitchen would be in it. It’s a living landmark of what hospitality, heart, and homemade food should look like. It’s not trying to be the next big thing. It already is the big thing—for those who know where to look.

So go. Order a bowl of the soup of the day. Add a grilled cheese on the side. Sit for a moment and feel time slow down. Because in a world full of noise, the Soup Kitchen in Sugar House is a quiet, delicious reminder of what really matters.

Trust me—once you taste it, you’ll understand why I keep...

It's a shell of what it used to be, I went recently after not going for about 15 years and the experience was vastly different from the Soup Kitchen of the 90's to early 2000's. They used to have the most delicious and flavorful soups that drew in crowds and could not be missed, cooked and prepared with love and to perfection, but that seems to no longer be the case these days.

I got the clam chowder and it lacked flavor and had a weird mushy texture, it was not creamy. Nothing like it used to be. They only offered one type of breadstick these days, and it was basic and bland, dry texture... this is a far cry from the past where they offered 3-4 different types that were far superior in texture and flavor... Where's the garlic cheesy bread that they were famous for that put them on the map and that I still had fond memories of a dozen years later?! Gone!!

I got a chicken sandwich and even the bread on the sandwiches are different and inferior to what they used before, it used to be a lot more buttery and dense and delicious. The chicken didn't taste freshly prepared, it seemed like it was a warmed up breaded frozen patty. The sandwich was poorly constructed and fell apart as you ate it, the toothpicks barely helped.

The interior and decor is the same from when they were established, which I actually find great and nostalgic, but there is a lot of clutter around like stacked chairs and broken freezers and some areas could be cleaned and put together a lot better without disrupting the history and charm.

Overall mixed feelings now, they're definitely under new ownership or management it seems, inferior recipes and love in the food and lost key menu items from the past, they've lost their edge and appeal and seem to be holding on to mostly nostalgic customers to bring business, but it's still worth a try and hopefully they can improve for the better and survive another...

Nothing like ordering an avacodo vegetarian sandwich then told they are out of avocado. So I figured I’m there already, I’ll get the tuna salad sandwich since I eat fish occasionally. The lady made me a chicken salad sandwhich and I realized about 3 bites down. I have eaten meat in 10 years and I’m beyond upset and disguised. All she said was ā€œI didn’t know we were out of everything, no one told me.ā€ So that’s an excuse to sub one thing for the other and hope that no one notices? I eat here often as I work around the corner. This mistake just cost you a customer. Is 2019, please educate your employees on the difference between vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian or don’t offer options available to these dietary...

Life- changing and their breadsticks!! Have you tried this delicious place before? I’m obsessed with the area, aesthetics, food, prices, the whole experience šŸ’ž.@Soup Kitchens šŸ² Menu & Food • Known for soups and sandwiches, comfort-food style. • Some popular soups: Chicken Noodle, Cream of Tomato, New England Clam Chowder, Split Pea with Ham, Cheddar Broccoli, Vegetable Beef, Spicy Beef Chili. • They include garlic breadsticks with many orders (the amount depends on order size). • Prices are considered affordable for what you get. āø» šŸ›ļø History & Culture • The building was built in 1912, once housed Eleventh East Furniture Co. • The Soup Kitchen opened in the mid-1970s after the building was used for antiques; the current owner’s family got the Sugar House location in 1976. • It’s become a local landmark: people go not just for the food, but for the ambiance — vintage decor, familiar staff, nostalgic vibe. āø» āš ļø Recent Developments • As of late 2024, the current owner (Stuart Aitken) is looking to sell the restaurant, and there’s interest from long-time employees to buy it. • Some plans (expressed by involved parties) include expanding the menu (e.g. adding vegan options), increasing outreach (including feeding homeless populations), and more social media presence.

Another go to favorite for takeout. My co-workers/friends and I have 30 minutes for lunch and Soup Kitchen is more than accommodating to take our to go orders over the phone. By the time I arrive, our orders are packaged and ready to be paid for. The soups are still hot and sandwiches fresh. We usually take our lunches before the noon rush starts up and have had no issues with service or food. My order is ready when I need it to be ready and I’m back at work within the time allotted. I don’t need the service to be impeccable as long as I receive what I paid for without deficiencies. Ergo, the 5-star rating from me.

My child and I went here for the first time today. What a cool shop. The dude running the counter is friendly and knowledgeable. We had good service, and the atmosphere is chill. My companion and I chose the chicken noodle, cream of tomato, and the New England Clan Chowder. Each was quite good. There were a lot of take out orders being picked up by hubgrub types, as we listened to tunes played on the kitchen's sound system. This place has a good vibe. I will be back.
