From the outside it looks small and as I entered what got my attention was how clean and neat it was. It also looks bigger inside, sharp but simple, good selection of Spanish music in the background, and well lit. Ordered a Mexican hamburger with Jarritos soda. I sat down and my soda was delivered to my table alongside a small bowl of chili green peppers. My order arrived in short time and after one bite I could tell this was done right. Lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, the meat was cooked perfectly, and the cheese was melted over the meat patty nicely. The green chile peppers can be enjoyed by taking a straight bite or put in the burger whole, I elected the latter and it added a nice kick to the burger. The service was excellent here and the staff were friendly. The menu here is simple and note if you are hungry you may want to get two, you can’t beat the price and quality here. This was an...
Read moreMy first experience with Loncheria El Popo started in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. My family and I have enjoyed their lonches for the past four decades. We were very happy to learn they had opened some restaurants in Laredo, Texas but were beyond ecstatic when we learned they opened one is San Antonio. Everything, from the atmosphere, the service, to the food has remained true to their roots. Great food at a great price! There is nothing overwhelming about this place, just authentic people making great lonches. Simple as that.
I encourage you to try their unique tasting lonche de ternera. Most people order 2 or 3 lonches for themselves, so try their varieties. You will not be disappointed. Don’t forget about those serrano chiles and carrots and to complete it with a Mexican coke. Yummy!!!
Now that we found this place in San Antonio, it will be part of our...
Read moreTried this place for the first time. From what I saw they only have three options. Ternera lonche, burger, and lonche de winnie. I ordered two ternera lonches. The bread is really good, but they don't put too much shredded beef (ternera) in the lonche (sandwich) which is why is so cheap at $2.50/lonche. The lonche is a little small and It comes with lettuce, tomatoes and mustard. The mustard takes away from the flavor of the beef in my opinion, again perhaps because there isn't enough meat. Of course you can ask them to omit the mustard when ordering. The shredded beef has great flavor by itself. I wouldn't mind paying more if they piled it with more meat and I don't know how much extra they would charge. The lonche has great flavor potential, but I don't know if I'll be coming back. Maybe I'll try it again in the future and ask for...
