This place has potential to be very good but fell short on the food and left us wanting. Would give them a 2.5 if available. Tried fideo, quesabirria tacos, Tampiquena de sirloin (mole enchilada, grilled sirloin, raja poblano). We felt this would provide a good sample for a first time visit, also ordered three cocktails.
First off, I am usually a low sodium person and would be the first to call out a dish is too salty but every dish could have benifited from salt and or some seasoning.
The Fideo is listed under soups and I grew up and always knew it to be a soup. What I got was noodles, not even fried well for that authentic home taste, in tomatoes sauce, no broth. Basically bland spaghetti. NOTE - take menue discriptions literally and not the header it's under.
The sirloin had absolutely no seasoning or pre-marinade, just grilled meat. The mole enchilada was just mole on a folded greasy tortilla, no stuffing. Our bad for assuming there would be as every others enchilada on the menue had something. The mole, on the other hand, was really good, balanced and the star of everything we tried. The rajas were okay but not great, again has potential lacking seasoning.
The tacos were meh, better than most at our table but again lacking. I was good after one, not typical for me and tacos. Adding salsas and or mole made them okay for others to eat.
Of the three drinks, our table maybe drank in total half of one. One was so sweet it made my teeth hurt, others discribed it as over sugared kool-aid. Another was listed as smokey/ sour but all we got was smokey, not balanced. Now I am not a fan of that kind of smokey in my drinks but the table agreed that of the three, Paloma included, this was the most palatable.
Service Host was wonderful, welcoming and accommodating. Waitress was okay. Check ins were few, hence not asking for table salt and pepper in fear of food going cold. Upon noticing of foods being pushed aside and half eaten, no questions were asked her. In fact, there was never a is everything okay or how's the food. Even when comments were made about the $20 drinks not being favorable and left undrunk 30 mins after being brought out, there was not one comments from her, one way or the other.
Glad we tried but will not visit again. Sadly, would...
Read moreAtmosphere: Has a rustic feel that makes it feel modern with a fusion of old-time kitchen. Nothing worth visiting or going out of your way for. Service: Drinks orders were taken for the party and I had water. The server did not return for approximately 15+ minutes to fill my water or take the actual food order or additional drink order. Recommendations on serving size seem inaccurate. Food: You will have a better taste at a Chipotle that is ready to close for the night. Order was Alambre de chuleta de puerco and enchiladas de mole. The Almbre was tasteless with low to zero flavor or seasoning present. Seemed cooked over steam although it was served on a parrilla I would expect some type of sear. Mole enchiladas were just a light chocolate paste and barely had a better taste than the alambre. The majority of the dishes do not come with sides, kind of idiotic for a Mexican restaurant. I did try the Ceviche and it was very good, so if you are forced at your will to go here order that dish(This is a sea food dish with raw fish). Sides: Rice, tortillas, chips, guac. Rice is mediocre as if it came from a quick and ready box out of HEB. The tortillas were a bit better but nothing worth asking for. Chips were actually one of the outstanding pieces of this place, lightly salted, seemed homemade, and tasted better than most chips. The guac seemed like your every day guac that you get, once again nothing exciting. Drinks: I did not personally have a drink but the party I was with seemed to enjoy them and ordered more than what one would normally. It was found that one drink may have tasted like the inside of a Hobby Lobby, so just be careful of El Diablo's drink if that's not...
Read moreAnother great Yelp find! In town from Fort Worth for the weekend and wanted to experience some south Texas Mexican food. Luckily this was around the corner from our hotel and took reservations on a Saturday night.
We arrived at 8:45 for our 9pm reservation. They sat us right away and we loved the ambience and interior. It definitely came across as an upscale restaurant but get the employees were so friendly and down to earth. I love to dine in a restaurant where they greet you quickly, bring your drinks and chips and don’t make you sit forever. We had no less than three different employees stop by and make sure we were being taken care of. That’s 💯 top notch!
The chips and salsa are complimentary. Loved those fresh chips. They’re thick and crispy. The three different salsas were amazing!
I opted for Birria enchiladas and then added rice and charro beans. It wasn’t until later that I realized those were additional. Worth it though. My wife oddities quesa Birria.
We were both impressed with our meals. The charro beans are definitely made per order and I waited about 7-8 minutes after receding my order to get them. They come out piping hot but unfortunately my tacos were just slightly under hot and more just warm. The rice was just barely warm too. It would have been better to bring everything out at once.
Unfortunately they lost the last star with serving just warm food. The taste was good but that little difference means a lot. Especially when it’s fine Mexican dining prices.
I would come back here and try it...
