Having experienced the same issues based on at least two visits, I think it's appropriate to assess this place. The interior has somewhat recently undergone remodeling, and I like the results. After all, if you're not down with our most famous local meme - "Big Red and Barbacoa" - then SA just might not be for you. Anyway, my first impression based on my last visit was negative: A makeshift drive-through out in front. I already find drive-throughs loathsome in general, which isn't Tommy's fault. But the problem here kicks in when you're forced to compare the prompt service the people in cars are receiving compared to what you're receiving if you've chosen to dine in. Tommy's isn't alone in this offense, but it still needs pointing out: If the waiter or waitress does not bring chips and salsa along with drink order (Never make the customer ask!), then it is up to a member of management to correct the waitstaff. When some people don't need to ask, but others do, then you make those people wonder IS IT SOMETHING ABOUT ME??? Do I somehow not look like the kind of person who will notice the absence of the appetizer?... The people in those cars out in front don't need to ask. I ordered the carne guisada plate, and everything (rice, beans, tortillas) was tasty. Just not very hot, which the waitress would have no idea about because she never circled back around to ask how the food came out. Now, plenty of other Tex-Mex cafes engage in the sorry practice of diner abandonment. So again, Tommy's is not alone with this issue. But the other places are a: cheaper and b: not so close to the airport, with the potential to give visitors a negative first impression of our city. I left never having my drink refilled, or offered a to-go box. When the waitress had her opportunity to offer me those things, she chose instead to chat with the cashier. ...And all the while, I must remind you, all those folks sitting in their cars were treated to prompt service with a sense of urgency. Tommy's punishes those who wish to dine in, and I am not likely to return. SA must be the most tightly competitive city when it comes to this sort of cuisine, so why would I come back to this place when instead I could opt for...
Las Palapas, Don Pedro's, Mi Tierra, Taqueria La Tapatia, Pollos Asados Los Nortenos... just to name a few.
Visitors to San Antonio, make a note here. Those are some great leads. You will want to avoid dining on the Riverwalk, as well as certain places near...
Read moreI’m genuinely disappointed to write this, as this used to be one of my favorite spots before I moved out of the neighborhood. I’m not sure what’s changed in the past few months, but today’s experience was horrible. Unfortunately, I completed the check survey by rating the food as great before actually checking the food because it used to be great!! Not today...
I ordered 2 huevos rancheros, 2 bean and cheese tacos, a picadillo with cheese, a carne guisada with cheese, and a large lemonade. Only the bean and cheese tacos and the lemonade were decent. I asked for both red and green salsa—was told they were in the bag, but they weren’t. There was also no plasticware included, which might be something customers now have to request specifically, but that was never the case before.
The food quality was awful. The potatoes tasted old, the over-easy eggs were overcooked, and the ranchero sauce was watery and completely flavorless—more like warm vegetable broth than a hearty sauce. The carne guisada had tough, dry chunks, which suggests being overcooked or the bottom of the pot. I'm baffled because it's Saturday, so I'd think they'd be cooking fresh all day.
This wasn’t just one bad item—it was nearly the whole meal and the service. That level of decline doesn’t happen overnight. It’s clear the quality and care that once made this place special have dropped off significantly. I truly hope they turn things around, but I won’t be returning...
Read moreThis was our first time eating at Tommy’s. This place seems to be very popular and was full. Our waitress took our order however she seemed to be a little overwhelmed from running around the restaurant and taking other orders. Our order was brought out incorrectly and we were missing a few items however staff in the back brought it out and reminded the waitress to charge us for it. Once we were able to get her attention we brought it up and let her know what we were missing; but being in the service industry myself it’s understandable and she did take accountability and apologized for the mistake and assured us it would not be on the ticket. The service she provided was good she just needed more support. We ordered Togo tacos and After several minutes we had to go up to the cooking area and noticed our order was sitting at their window for a long time before another lady handed it to us. Unfortunately when we got home that order was incorrect as well, completely different than what we ordered with the waitress. I do feel bad for the waitress and maybe Tommy’s needs more staff to be able to handle the amount of customers that visits this place as popular as it is. I give the most stars for the food which was very good but will not be...
