I wouldn't define this as a "dive bar" but it definitely has a laid back atmosphere to it. It's a great place for drinks after work, before a night out, or those times when you just need a drink. There are always cheap drink specials ($2 wells, I'm talking to you) and a good crowd if you're into meeting new people or just people watching.
The bouncers can be hit or miss but in my experience, if you leave them alone, they won't bother you. On a Sunday afternoon, we met a group of friends and one was wearing his Nike slides. The bouncer told him slides weren't allowed because they look "ghetto". I'm assuming this is coming from management, not this particular bouncer's personal viewpoint.
The bartenders and wait staff are super friendly. It's easy to see that every bartender has his/her group of regulars. I recommend getting a seat at the bar. It's much easier to order food/drinks from the bar than wait for a waiter to get to you at a table. Also, if you're sitting at a table and move to the bar, you have to close one tab to start another. Speaking of food, the burgers are yummy and you can never go wrong with sharing a bunch of appetizers.
The bar uses TouchTunes as a "jukebox" which allows you to download the app and pay for the songs you want to hear. This actually works in favor of the bars as some get a residual depending on how many TouchTunes members they have at their bar. Usually, you can hear your favorite country songs being played. I particularly like to go because I know on any given night at least one song by Randy Rogers Band will play. The one time I was disappointed in the music selection was when they were filtering certain (it felt like all) rap artists. We tried playing songs from the most popular artists - Biggie, Tupac, Drake - and not a single song was available to play. My boyfriend messaged them on Facebook that night and never heard back.
I think I'll always have a soft spot for this bar because it's where I met my boyfriend. However, I will say it can be hit or miss - whether it's service, environment, food or the bouncers. Either way, it's a great option if you're looking for a laid back atmosphere with cheap drinks and great...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you want to ruin your night, and potentially ruin your life, go here. I got off work and wanted to stop at the icehouse for a beer. As soon as I walk up to the door, a redhead, morbidly obese doorman starts interrogating me "where are you coming from?" "How much have you had to drink tonight?" "So you got off work at 11pm, its now midnight, and you haven't been drinking, your story doesn't add up I don't feel comfortable letting you in"
The doorman then points out that the spot I was in was a handicapped spot. --Okay this 'handicapped spot' was very poorly marked, dimly lit, and there was not an actual sign on a metal rod, but rather nailed to a brick wall 8 to 10 feet in front of the spot.
He ruined the vibe for me, so I apologized for my parking mistake and left. As soon as I left the parking lot onto Wurzbach a policeman almost immediately pulls me over. And not just pulled me over, but raised his voice to me, shouting for me to show my hands, keep them to where he can see them. He orders me out of the car and administers a field sobriety test on me. Which I did willingly, I had just come from work and was 100% sober, not a drop of alcohol or any other substances.
The cop tells me that someone called in about me, saying I was illegally parked, stumbling and incoherent. He then tells me that he can tell I'm completely sober, and the call was in error/false. We laughed it off, and he let me go free and clear
I would recommend wurzbach icehouse properly train the doorman I mentioned before, apparently he is dialing the police every chance he gets, trying to get patrons and potential patrons DWI's. The way I understand it is that bars do not want people leaving their establishment getting DWI's after leaving their place of business, as it is bad for business. It is a shame that this overzealous doorman wasted valuable public resources (taxpayers police force) calling in with absolutely unwarranted claims.
Needless to say, me and my friends will NEVER be going back to wurzbach icehouse due to this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am visiting from Austin, and had an absolutely horrific experience at this bar due to the highly unprofessional and childish behavior of the arrogant, surly bartender. I had never been to Wurzbach Ice House, and did not see the back of the menu before ordering. Not even a single minute went by before I saw the potato skins and asked if I could change my order at the bar. The bartender proceeded to cuss out my boyfriend loudly, shouting that when you come to a restaurant, you should know what the f* you want. It was so inappropriate that we left, and the erratic, angry bartender ran outside after us, continuing to cuss us out. I tried to call and speak to a manager regarding this man's extremely rude and unprofessional behavior, but the bartender answered and after pretending to get the manager, told me to get a new boyfriend. My five minutes at this a horrific experience because of this bartender that should absolutely lose his job due to his complete lack of respect for the customer. I will never return to this restaurant, and would like everyone to know that the bartender who's name he would not release to me, is a complete douchebag that broke rules of common courtesy that should not...
