Benedict Twist: Shrimp Pesto
I've eaten at the BR downtown and was soooo disappointed with everything, So when BR in Mission Valley was selected I didn't expect much.
I arrived on Friday at 10 am. The wait time was 5 minutes and the restaurant was packed indoors and outdoors.
The menu concoctions and names are intriguing. I was curious to try out the Benedict with shrimp and pesto what an innovative twist on classic dishes. While the concept behind this dish was undoubtedly appealing, I couldn't help but feel that the execution fell short in terms of flavor. However, the presentation was undeniably impressive.
The presentation of the Benedict was aesthetically pleasing, The carefully poached eggs were perfectly cooked, and the vibrant green pesto dollop added a visually appealing contrast to the dish. The shrimp needed a friend as it tasted like it was blanched. This definitely could have been sauteed. Red makes everything enticing so the red bell pepper with a hint of sweetness lent an element of elegance.
The combination of shrimp and pesto seemed like a match, and always are but unfortunately, the flavors didn't harmonize as well as my historical palette is familiar. The shrimp felt like an addition rather than an integral part of the dish, making the overall flavor profile a bit disjointed. While the idea of a Benedict with shrimp and pesto is commendable, it is evident that some refinements could greatly enhance the dish.
And I had pancakes. And won't do that again.
But the Drunken Oreo Dream, makes you Drunken For Love. Flavor, taste, presentation, the perfect breakfast drink with or without food. The blended liqueurs were undeniably captivating. Whoever created this concept right on!
At least this BR location experience raised the bar to 3.5 from negative. I would eat here again but it may not automatically be on my radar.

Read moreThis location was subpar. Arrived for (today) Saturday Lunch at 12:57. We were sat quicker than quoted 30 mins @ 1:08pm which was awesome especially because the restaurant was not busy.
However, we sadly were not acknowledged by a server until 1:29pm. Not a Hi, I’ll be right with you. Hi, sorry for the wait, I will be your server and will help you shortly. Nothing. So I got up from my seat to find the host, host was not at host station so I went back to my seat. Saw a manager doing a table touch, so I asked the manager to come over please. Explained to her that we have been sitting her over 20 mins and haven’t been greeted by a server. She politely apologized and offered us beverages and took our order. As she took down. Our order, “our server” dropped waters to our table without an apology. Just simply set the waters down and walked away.
As a server and bartender myself in the past (all of high school/college), I was beside myself. I understand mistakes happen, you get busy, but 1)it wasn’t busy lol, 2)it takes all of 2 seconds to acknowledge a table and apologize.
Food was dropped by another person and once again, server never came to do a 2-minute/ 2-bite check. SAD! Food can be amazing, but service is EVERYTHING.
The Manager truly made up for the overall experience. She surprised us with a coffee cake, ensured food tasted well, apologized for the confusion, brought us our check and closed out our tab. Overall, the experience could have ended poorly but the manager was able to salvage...
Read moreI wanted to like Breakfast Republic and seriously I tried (I’ve been here 4 times). The last time I visited is for sure going to stay that way. First off, their service is horrible ESPECIALLY at this location. You have to try so hard to get the servers attention, I wonder if they’re all so sleepy in the morning and don’t notice when a customer is waving and calling out to them, even standing up to walk up to them and ask for help. I honestly thought that this was only a thing the first time I visited because this spot was new a couple years ago but it’s sad to see that this stayed true through out the years. I ordered the chilaquiles and I get this plate of wet nacho chips, a tablespoon of rice, beans and 3 eggs. I’m confused as to why they would think serving wet chips was okay. I might as well have been eating pasta covered in salsa. Why not put the chips and salsa on the side?? Nothing else on the plate was redeemable other than… the eggs I guess? Not pictured but I also got an orange juice that tastes like it’s straight out of a Minute Maid bottle. Anyway I’ll never come back to Breakfast Republic as they’ve failed to show why they’re worth paying for. There’s a plethora of amazing brunch and breakfast spots in San Diego, this place is way too hyped up by tourists. You’re better off finding a place with less hype but great food and great service (trust me, they’re...
