My husband and I were on our way back to San Diego from Coronado Island, craving some Hawaiian fare. After a quick search, we found Homestyle Hawaiian located in Midway Point Loma--perfectly on our route. Although it took about 35 minutes to get our food, it was absolutely worth the wait. We indulged in the chicken katsu--crispy, golden, and smothered in a delectable katsu sauce, accompanied by a creamy macaroni salad and fluffy rice. We didn't stop there. We also tried the regular spam musubi, the Portuguese spam musubi, and the deep-fried spam musubi, each more scrumptious than the last. We can't wait to return! A special shout-out to the staff, who were not only friendly but also exceptionally attentive, making our wait feel shorter with their great service. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait, but trust me, the food and the warmth of the service make it well worth it.

We were super excited to try this place before a nice day on the water. Unfortunately, despite there being no one in the restaurant, we had an unexpected 30 minute wait for 2 orders of Chicken Teriyaki. The employee at the front desk was extremely apologetic, but we had no warning it would take that long or we would’ve chosen another place to eat. Also the rest of our orders came up almost immediately which means by the time our full order was ready for take out, half of our order was lukewarm at best. That said, my lukewarm Chicken Katsu was pretty good and I’m sure it would’ve been delicious hot. Our guests liked the Chicken Teriyaki as well despite the lengthy wait!

Spent over $200 for food and they were unable to provide plates forks napkins all that was extra it was like a $1.50 per plate if I wanted plates You would think spending over 200 bucks they would at least provide some plates napkins and forks but the people I bought the food for loved The food it was great but the aftercare at this place they don't care about the customer also had a pickup time of 12:00 we didn't get out of there till around 12:30 they weren't ready and they had plenty of time to have our order ready

This review is based solely on the customer service or should I say lack thereof received here from Tricia O T. We unfortunately did not get to try any of the food here.

My guy & I placed an order & sat down to wait for our food. We were followed by a family of 5 who did the same. After about 15 minutes we see the family after us begin to get items. It was easily determined that they didn’t order the items received & it struck us odd they would receive something we ordered before we did & complementary at that. But we put the thought aside as they were with kids just coming from the karate place in the strip mall and figured they were regulars & the owner was being nice to them. FF a few more minutes and more food starts going to their table while were just sitting here like what is going on? After multiple back and forths with the plates ordered and the other guests she ended up giving our entire order to this family. Not a single time did Tricia acknowledge us or the mistake made. We’re watching this whole thing unfold & it was like were sitting there invisible. Instead, she turns around walks back to the kitchen & tells them to redo our order. It is at this point – due to the lack of customer service we ask her to please not recook anything, we’d like to cancel our order. Not because of the mistake itself, people make mistakes but because of the subpar customer service following. The family who got the food was more apologetic and showed more concern for us as customers than Tricia.

Unfortunately for everyone involved Tricia decides to tell us she would not give us our money back and that we had to write a letter to the owner Gil or contact the BBB to get our money back. It was at this point I began filming and I’m so glad I did. Because what went from 2 customers unhappy with the service received and simply asking for a refund turned into the owner of this business losing it, repeatedly body shaming/ fat shaming me. From making comments about how hungry I must be, to her puffing out her cheeks and arms mocking my size. Even as far as her lunging her arms over the counter attempting to what? Grab my phone? Hit me? Tricia O T went off the deep end. This back and forth went on much too long. In front of other customers where she continued to body shame & laugh at us. She even went as far as saying she wasn’t body shaming but that I have insecurities? This woman Tricia – was completely unhinged. Ali the chef finally got Gil on the phone & as you would expect any owner to do – he immediately told her to refund us. Sadly, even after that, Tricia’s psychotic fatphobic antics continued.

I was completely flabbergasted & felt like I was dealing with an elementary school bully. I couldn’t believe in 2024, in Drew Afualo’s world, I was being fat shamed because I was a displeased customer at her restaurant.

There are many home style Hawaiian type food restaurants in this beautiful city of San Diego. I strongly urge you to reconsider your choice if you’ve found yourself reading this review. A person of this low vibration does not deserve your...

This place has really good food and I wish it had good service to match. I've been in there several times and it seems that they give priority to delivery services over dine in customers.

The format of the restaurant is a counter restaurant so I generally expect about 10 minutes or so before food comes out. In one case I waited at my table for 30 minutes before it came out and I had to ask the man behind the counter several times. At one point the chef came out to yell at me stating, "If you want fast food, go to McDonald's." Frankly I would if I had known I would have done exactly that. The whole point of a counter restaurant is to bridge the gap between fast food and full service dining. I pick a counter place by the length of the line and decide if it's worth the wait. And, by all means, if the kitchen is backlogged I won't be offended if you told me that before I place the order, and if the kitchen is thay backlogged they clearly have made enough in sales to cover their bottom line so it shouldn't be a problem to do that.

What was more frustrating, was that they don't make their restroom available to customers and when you have to wait 30 minutes it makes it worse.

I'd be inclined to give this place another shot if the owner chef or whoever is in charge gets her kitchen in order and figures out why they get so easily backlogged. In which case I'd happily update my review.

Again, excellent food....

We were visiting San Diego last week and Homestyle Hawaiian was on the way to the airport. It has great reviews, so we figured it was a win. To start the woman taking orders was kind, cheerful, and fun to talk to. I appreciate happy employees that take the time to welcome me properly. But as far as the food....I was truly hoping to taste authentic Hawaiian food, but I don't think this food was that. I could be wrong, but even some Hawaiian chain food restaurants I've been to seemed more true to Hawaii than this. After ordering, we waited 25 minutes for it to be ready. Each order came out separately, so we were eating at different times. I ordered the Katsu chicken with rice and macaroni salad. I thought the rice would have some Hawaiian flavor to it, but it was plain, white rice. I was hoping the macaroni salad would taste different than what my mom made growing up, but it didn't. It was heavy on the mayonnaise. Worst of all my chicken was plain, there was no sauce with it. It was just panko, fried chicken... I didn't realize fried chicken was a Hawaii thing. In the end, we paid a lot of money for okay, plain tasting food. I love to praise small, local joints, but this one did not please...
