MARCH 2024 UPDATE:
I came back to OB Beans for an espresso and to show a travel companion one of my favorite coffee shops. I ended up purchasing whole beans due to the roast on dates and the Ethiopian Gesha offering. I can't wait to home brew with these beans. I also purchased a Hario product that I plan to use for smaller pour overs so I don't have to use a paper filter for a less than 10oz cup. A few other points that made this visit awesome: Skateboard parking, quaint back patio, friendly staff. I was able to take a few photo's to help bring my visit to life. Enjoy.
The San Diego coffee scene exceeds expectations again! I sought out OB Beans Coffee Roasters based on it's proximity to both the beach and the airport and based on their reputation for great tasting coffee. I was absolutely delighted.
I came straight from SAN airport to OB Beans Coffee Coffee Roasters since it proved to be a great meeting spot before heading to the nearby beach on a Sunday afternoon. I was able to get my coffee and kill some time while waiting to meet a friend. The vibe was relaxed, casual, and fun! The coffee was seriously delicious. I would for sure come back to OB Beans for more coffee and to purchase some whole beans for home brewing.
Also, if you are looking for a beach vibe that is not touristy, the OB area is just for you. I think OB Beans encapsulates the Ocean Beach neighborhood well. So if you are exploring San Diego and what to know what Ocean Beach is all about, spend some time at OB Beans...
Read moreI'm in the minority of coffee drinkers that mostly drinks black pour over coffee - no sugary or milky beverage here, I want to taste the notes present from the multiple processing methods. Although I do also love espresso as much as any avid coffee drinker.
This is one of the few places that still does pour overs and they have two good options usually. For a true pour over nerd there's a step missing in the process of rinsing the coffee filter. I know I'm nit-picking here but not rinsing the natural paper filter before adding the coffee defiantly impacts the flavor. Especially with the brown filters they leave a "filter" taste that can easily be tested by just pouring hot water through the filter w/o coffee and tasting it.
Beyond this meaningless point (and likely a personal preference) this place is great! It would probably be a huge ask for them to train all their staff on this as pour over coffee is probably only 10-20% their daily sales and arguably already an involved process. It can get pretty packed in here the ambiance is commuter type touristy but I have come in with a wet swimming suit no problem it is...

So, let me break this down for ya....
100% one of the best vibe coffee establishments I've visited (globally), and that's saying something! Maybe it's the sewing machine in the window of the boutique.... naw, it's the beans man!!! I digress.....
The coffee was legit and the baristas were an absolute pleasure to speak with! I went with a Cortado AND Americano because I wanted to see if the skills matched the vibe, they did!!!
Then I realized my nourishment wasn't up to date as I'd just arrived in town from an international flight the evening before. ENTER WAFFLE WITH AVOCADO AND BACON!?!?!?!? What in the ever loving, middle of nowhere corn field, majestic thing of beauty that turned out to be! Seriously, never before seen this pairing, but wow am I glad I can speak to it now!!!!
Super pleased with my experience at OB Beans Coffee Roasters, and I sure you...
