Kinda underwhelmed with the service. Came in for the first time and tried the short rib nachos. They were the reason I wanted to come back to try the short rib grilled cheese.
I show up. No hostess. I sit myself. No biggie. She was doing everything but hosting including eating on the floor while talking to customers. I've run 2 restaurants and that's never been okay. Even if on break.
After a few minutes, dude with greyish beard notices me sitting , doesn't introduce himself as my server. Just said what do you wanna drink? I order a sprite and waited like 10 minutes for a SOFT DRINK. He takes my order. I order the grilled cheese with ONE simple mod with no mushrooms. Guess what's on it when it comes out ? Mushrooms. I let the food runner know and he said he'd take it back. The only consistency was the tight ticket times but game or no game, FOH staff was underwhelming tonight. They were talking to everybody but me and those people HAPPENED to have boobs and lop sided the service as a male by himself trying to get the same experience but I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't have been better tended to if I were a woman. I get it, it's game night but staff should be able to handle things professionally. Especially when it's not that busy. The hostess was still roaming around like she was at home the entire time I was there. Maybe there's something I'm not getting but I'd probably come back for takeout because BOH are doing their jobs correctly. FOH needs work. Your hostess sets the tone for the entire experience and this culmination of that, waiting 10 min for a soft drink, not bringing out what I ordered and also focusing on the ladies more at the bar is troublesome. Idk if they expected me not to tip based on how I look (I did anyway) but as a FOH manager of a high volume restaurant in SD, I'd be...
Read moreNew review after April 17th, 2023 Menu update:
The Corner is a usual hang for us, and we are long running and happy customers. I know the menu update was designed to help with costs and will roll out in phases.
That being said, a lot of the favorites are gone or changed. The Salmon burger used to be a nice cut of fish, but is now a smashed seafood cake with unseasoned avocado and cucumbers. I got the crispy fish sandwich and it was super dry and sadly had no flavor. The new version of Brussel sprouts had half the flavor and twice the salt. In the countless times we've been here since they opened, we've never had a disappointing meal.
If you read my original review below, you see that I say the price can be a little high, but we kept coming back because the flavors were worth it. After tonight's meal, it feels like the quality of the dishes has decreased, yet the prices remained the same.
We're hoping that as the menu evolves, the Corner will find its footing, and we're gonna give it another try. But after tonight, it feels like a constant favorite place is suddenly a little less reliable.
Original review below (April, 2022)
A staple of Banker's Hill and always a good spot for eats. The food is usually pretty good, as are the specials. There's a long list of unique and local taps as well, so always something fun to try. I honestly feel the Ribs are the best I've tried in the city. That sauce is next level.
Wednesday night is Trivia Night - so get there early if you want to partake, or avoid entirely if you don't want the crowd as parking in the area can always be dicey.
Sometimes I also feel the prices can vary or trend to a higher side. But I'm also writing this during the middle of the Russian invasion of Ukraine where prices are fluctuating a lot, so that might...
Read moreWas here within the last few weeks with a small group. Food is good, atmosphere is average (it's a sports bar, what do you expect), but I'm leaving a review because of the poor service. The only reason I put 2 stars is because we had two different servers - one was amazing, and that person is what offset the other person's negative-star service. Law of averages.
We were seated at a table literally ten feet from the bar, and yet it was very difficult to flag down any of the 5-6 people we witnessed working. Rarely did anyone come to check on us. I distinctly remember having to flag someone down every time to order another round.
During one of these times, the server came over and I was able to place a drink order. Before anyone else at the table could also place theirs, this server walked away to fulfill my order. When he came back with the drink, I said "thank you, and I think others at the table wanted to order something as well."
His response: "Okay. Well, could you all tell me what you want so I don't have to come back here again?"
--- Please let me remind any readers here, that he previously walked away before anyone else could get a word in edgewise. ---
Sorry we frequented this place. Sorry we asked you to do your job. Sorry to your co-workers that have to deal with your incredibly awful work ethic. They probably spend a lot of their time picking up on your slack.
What I find the most curious is that this person did not have any problems spending copious amounts of time serving the table next to us of let's just say a "different racial/ethnic influence."
I do...
