I had found PodShare on Coliving.com. It was advertised as a long-term coliving place for digital nomads + remote workers. Now as someone who travels frequently, I've lived in many coliving / communal houses for digital nomads, and I was super uncomfortable upon first getting there, that I ended up cancelling my reservation that was originally for 31 nights after two nights.
Firstly, I just wanna say that the manager there was super kind and always helpful. I didn't interact with him too much but he checked in a few times to see if everything was good so I appreciated the effort there.
Unfortunately, the place itself did not meet the level/standards I hold for communal spaces (maybe I'm just picky!) The dishes were not cleaned thoroughly when I went to use some for my meals, and the drawers and some appliances had an interesting, oily grime to the touch.
The pod itself was very comfortable, but I do wish they had curtains or a sliding door. It was nice that they had lockers, and I was fortunate to have been in the small room of 4 pods, instead of the big room. However there are only two bathrooms for I think 18 guests.
Lastly, one of the guys from the big room walked past me saying "be careful, they have bed bugs here" and I was just absolutely mortified. I went to check my bed and didn't find any, but I did notice there was a slimey substance along the perimeter of my pod. I couldn't tell if it was just hot glue, or leak, or a mold, but seeing that was the last straw.
The air was all a bit musty so I was coughing a lot, and they don't have AC.
Other than that, it IS in a really great location, lots of restaurants/cafes near by and the waterfront is super close walking distance. It's a fine place if you're looking for a hostel for a couple days, but I couldn't imagine living there long term frankly as it didn't feel conducive to a proper remote working environment. They had a small booth with sound proof walls but it was the absolute...
Read moreSo I’ve read through quite a few of these reviews, and it seems like there are a lot of people who book this hostel expecting it to be like a hotel. A hostel is not a hotel. Podshare does not have curtains for the beds, and I was uncomfortable with that, but everything else was terrific. Even though there were quite a few guests staying, I didn’t have any problems with the 2 bathrooms they had downstairs. I was able to get up around 7 and take a nice shower and dry my hair without being in anyone’s way. One of the bathrooms is located in the same room that the beds for ease of having to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, and the other one was located off of the common area. It was considerate and used the common area one when showering in the morning, so as not to wake anybody else up and hat’s the general vibe there is people were pretty considerate of each other. I did see a couple people left their cubby light on when they should’ve turned it out while they weren’t there. Which curtains would’ve helped. There was community food that was left from other guests and I made breakfast home fries for everybody with what was there. Life is what you make it. Erica was super friendly and helpful and a pleasure to sit and talk to in the morning. If you’re not ready for an organic homegrown community experience, go stay at the Hilton. This is a really easy-going experience and you have great opportunities to meet interesting people from all over the world. I found everyone there to be extremely respectful. Oh, and by the way… narry, a SINGLE bedbug. So my walkaway review is: I had a pleasant day with nice people, would’ve preferred to have curtain or privacy screen to block the light her mother pods stay, I didn’t have a problem with the heat, although I was a little chilly at night and could’ve used an...
Read moreFound the Podshare hostels through airbnb during the 2024 twitch con. Needed somewhere to stay that was both affordable and near by and the $200 a night for any hotel within 2 miles was not worth it even by friends that did book those places, as the podshare amenities exceeded most of the hotels to include the ones with the $60 a night valet.
Pros and cons of the podshare here.
Pros: • Accessible to downtown • Affordable for those just needing a bed inside • Amazing live-in staff • Provides multiple amenities akin to apartment living • Incredible nice views and like-minded tenants • Entering the pod area is like a welcome home feeling • Quiet hours are respected (I felt bad for using my light to leave at 1am) • Any leftover or surplus food is marked as shared by others, so there is minimal waste • Anytime access to the pod by security code with 24/7 security and camera usage • Again, it is affordable and perfect for the need in Southern California.
Cons: • It is hot, but that is mostly due to the amount of body heat the pods generate • One AC unit for the common area, basic fan for bed areas that is loud but not bad for city life • Not really near by market or grocery store for those who don't eat out much • No laundry, but there was a washer and dryer that said staff use only, ask to use. So I can not say if you can actually do laundry here or not • Last con, check-in times are an 11 hour window, but that is also a Pro
No pictures, other reviews have some good photos, I was just too tired to take any inside that are post quality.
