I recently went to Basil Canteen before stopping by Slim's for a show. The space is nice, but we were put in a corner that didn't really allow us to fully enjoy the space. The service was serviceable but mediocre. Not particularly friendly or hugely helpful, but the did keep they glasses full and did ask if we wanted dessert. I got the standard pad thai with chicken instead of shrimp. It was tasty but average. From where I'm from, pad thai has bean sprouts on the side so they stay fresh with scallions and peanuts with shredded cabbage, carrot, eggs and topped with cilantro and lime. Almost all of the pad thai I've had in the Bay has too much tofu, bean sprouts mixed in so they lose their texture, hardly any scallions, no cabbage, carrot or cilantro... Thus making the dishes less colorful and flavorful. This is a complaint I have of most Thai places I've had here, along with Basil Canteen. On top of that, I'm not into paying 10 dollars for an average noodle dish. Pad thai should only be 10 dollars if it's above average. My partner got a tasty shrimp stir-fry with veggies but it was 14 dollars for a fairly small portion and it was very sauce heavy without any side of rice which is pretty cheap of them. Stir-fry needs rice if it's going to be more sauce than food. I won't be returning on purpose. I might go back if I'm in the area and the people I'm...
Read moreThis is Basil’s sister restaurant. I would consider this more of a Southeast Asian fusion restaurant rather than a strictly Thai one. Loved the open loft space and exposed brick walls. Great place for a large group dinner. Service was attentive and food was delicious.
I highly recommend the kang kiow wan roti (pan-fried Indian bread served with grilled skirt steak and green curry dipping) as a starter.
My entrée, the kao soi neur (grilled skirt steak and egg noodles in lime-coconut curry), a Burmese classic, was also excellent. It came topped with pickled mustard greens (they were very generous when I asked for some extra) and crunchy egg noodles. The grilled steak could have been a bit more tender, but the flavors were so good that I didn’t mind a little bit of toughness.
Also, the coconut juice here is also amazing. Comes with a few peels of...
Read moreOne of San Francisco's top Thai restaurants. They have incredible cocktails, to start! If I wasn't constantly late, I would come here simply for HH. The Siamese-Kaze is one among my favorites. About the food, each dish is of the highest caliber. Strongly recommend the Sakhoo Sa Mu appetizer (tapioca dumplings with pork and lettuce cups), Pad Ke Mao (wide rice noodles with green beans and skirtsteak), and Gaeng Ped Bpet Yang (red curry with roasted duck and pineapple). Last but not least, remember to leave room for some roti and Thai tea ice cream. You won't be sorry! This dessert...
