Backstory: We’re here on Vacation and had just left the SF Botanical Garden and were looking on Google for food in the area. The first recommendation on Google was a place called San Tung. The food looked good and reviews were good too. We got there and to our surprise there was a LONG WAIT, with tons of people outside waiting to get seated (see photo). All of things what led us to look around and what other options we might consider. We looked directly across the street and seen Chang’s Kitchen. We walked over to see the pictures of their food in the store front’s window. The food looks delicious so we have it a try. From the moment we walked in, the staff was kind, attentive, communicative and welcoming. The food came out in a very timely manner. (See photos for everything we ordered). Every single dish met our expectations and more! Our top favorite dishes from our order was the Wings, the Honey Walnut Shrimp and their Orange Chicken. Portions: very, very generous! We had boxes, and boxes of leftovers. Price/Cost: AFFORDABLE! Everything in SF is inflated and expensive (as all tourists towns seem to be) but to our surprise, our total was $117.xx! (Again, we got SO MUCH FOOD!) We predicted nothing less than $150.xx so we were extremely surprised at the affordability. Parking: we got lucky and found paid parking in the street. We personally did not see any kind of customer-parking but that appeared to be the case for every business on that street. Our only complaint: we understand that SF has a large number of people who order their food through apps to be picked up and delivered by food delivery people on bikes, but it really rubbed us the wrong way on how many of these food-delivery people on bikes are so impatient and demanding to the staff. They all seem to walk in as if their pick-up orders took priority over the sit down customers. It just was irritating to watch and hear while we sat and enjoyed our meal. Not the restaurants fault at all, and it would be nice is there was a different location in the restaurant specifically for those kinds of pick-up orders. All and All: we are so glad we were put in a position to have to look for another option to dine-in for dinner because these hidden gems always seem to be the underdogs that are...
Read moreThe worst nightmare restaurant experience that I have ever had!! Come here if you want overpriced mediocre food at best, insults from their owner and server, and poor customer service! I would leave zero stars if I could.
We traveled here on August 1,2021, and happened to be in the area. Therefore, we had no bias or prejudice against this restaurant.
After we sat down at the empty restaurant during lunch hour, we ordered our food, but we didn't order tea and the server didn't bring water but brought tea to us while we were waiting. We thought it should be free but later found out we were charged 4 dollars for the tea without even disclosing the cost upfront.
My mom asked for the price of a fish dish when we were ordering, they told us it was 13 or 14, then we found out the server lied to us about the price. For a fish dish priced at 19 dollars, the portion was ridiculously small because there was not much fish at all and was mostly tofu and veggies. The beef dish my parents ordered ended up being most tofu with very few pieces of beef.
My husband and I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolia Beef. The dishes were not even close to authentic. They must have used extreme amount of baking soda to tenderize the meat which made the chicken taste like baking soda and lost its original flavor. The Kung Pao chicken was not even Kung Pao Chicken. It was just a regular stir fry chicken.I bet their cook didn't know how to cook authentic Chinese traditional dishes...It is a shame that you call yourself a Chinese restaurant.
After I complained to the server for charging the tea without disclosing the cost upfront and the food portion being too small. The server reluctantly took the tea cost off our bill but started to argue with me and my husband with a rude attitude.
The server brought us one check after my parents indicated that they wanted a separate check. The owner humiliated my parents by saying "your daughter doesn't want to pay for your food" and call us poor :) Based on how empty their restaurant is, you know how they have treated their customers with dishonesty and insults.
I would not waste time and money with this Chang's Kitchen Restaurant unless you like the poor overpriced quality food and poor...
Read moreMy family and I have been to this place in excess of 70 times. We love this place so much. They have some of best Chinese food that we've had anywhere on planet Earth. Literally! Our children, now 7 and 9, especially love it here. My son has been coming here with us since he was born. They call this place Mr. Lu's. Mr. Lu is the gentleman that has always taken care of our family when we go there. Jenny, the own, Mr. Lu and the rest of the staff are like family to us and they treat us like family. We've watch as they treat all of their customers with the same friendliness. Every time that we go, if we walk back to the back of the restaurant toward the restroom, you can see in the hallway, multiple years of our own family Christmas cards hanging on the wall. You have to try the Salt and Pepper Fish. It's so good. It's not on the menu. You have to request it. Also, their combination Chow Mein is amazing. We've sent so many people here over the last almost 7 years. They all rave about it too. Give this place a try. It's one city block from Golden Gate Park on Irving, between 11th and 12th. You'll long to come back every time you visit...
