Shocked and disgusted by the horrible treatment we received at this location last night!!! After a long and tiring day in the city, my family was craving some really good Afghan food. We've eaten at the Fremont restaurant before (Don't know if these locations are related), so we were excited to discover another location in the city. My husband and brother in law dropped my sister and I off at the restaurant, along with my two children, to find parking. We walked in and told the waiter/owner (whoever he was) that we were a party of six. After we were seated (this is a seat yourself restaurant) the owner asks us (my sister and I, along with two children) to give up our seats for a family that walked in more than five minutes after us stating that he did not want to serve us and had the right to refuse service to whoever he wants. We could kind of tell The owner did not want us there from the beginning, as he showed no hospitality, wouldn't help us figure out seating for a party of six, directly told us to go to a different restaurant, etc but we were trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. We should've gone with our gut feeling. This owner/waiter was completely out of line, unprofessional, and shameless. We were left waiting outside in the dark in an unfamiliar area with children (my family is visiting from out of state). I've never experienced anything like this before and we eat out often. Will never go back or recommend this place to others. If the owner cares about his customers, then I am waiting for him to reach out. Until then I'll believe that God saved me from something horrible from this place..could be a stomach ache as others wrote about in their review or being cheated...
Read moreI only tried the vegetarian dishes, which I felt was underwhelming. Afghan cuisine is popular for it's meat options so they might be better tasting. I also skipped the Desserts so cannot review for them.
I had the 1). Badenjan Chalow - vegetarian eggplant in tomato stew, served with afghan bread and rice; and 2). Shornakhud - cold mint chutney filled with garbanzo chickpeas and potato
The Shornakhud is served cold which I felt took away most of the mint flavours. I would serve it at room temperature or even warm to help elevate the flavour of the mint.
The Badenjan had too much tomato flavor which was overpowering the eggplant. I couldn't taste or even feel the eggplants. The bread was not the authentic afghan naan bread. It was thin and crusty (like a pizza crust). It had sesame seeds on it, which tasted good but the bread is nothing to write home about. I like the naan bread served in Pakistani restaurants such as Pakwan and Shalimar more. The rice was well-cooked and nice.
When I visited for lunch, there was only one guy in the restaurant who was taking orders + cooking food + serving them. He refused to accept card payments, saying he doesn't know how to operate the card machine and the owner is outside. So I was forced to pay in cash. He said the same thing to a couple of other customers as well. There is no "cash only" sign anywhere.
Overall, I would not visit this place again. But their meat and dessert options might be good.
They should 1). teach their staff to operate the card machine, or put out a "cash only" sign on the front; and 2). improve their naan bread. Afghan cuisine is famous for its great naans which deserve to be shown to San...
Read moreI visited this place with a group of 10, hoping to support an Afghan-owned business as a proud member of the Afghan community. What we encountered was one of the most appalling dining experiences I’ve ever had. The restaurant lacked enough chairs to accommodate our group, which is understandable, but when I politely informed the owner of this issue, he responded with shocking hostility and disrespect. The owner, who made a point of boasting about his supposed “importance” and connections to “important people,” accused us of making excuses just to use the bathroom—an absurd and baseless claim. He then launched into a tirade, belittling us and making derogatory remarks about “newcoming” Afghans, despite the fact that I’ve lived in the U.S. for over a decade. His behavior was not only unprofessional but deeply offensive, especially to customers trying to support his business. I later learned from others in the community that this owner has a history of treating customers poorly, which makes me question the authenticity of the glowing reviews this place has online. The lack of basic hospitality, combined with the owner’s arrogance and insulting demeanor, makes this restaurant an absolute disgrace to Afghan culture and hospitality. Save your money and dignity—there are plenty of other Afghan restaurants in San Francisco that treat their customers with the respect they deserve. I will never return and strongly urge others to steer clear of this...
