All Hail Katie! Queen of the Triton Hotel!
'Be Our Guest! Be Our Guest! Have a coffee - who needs rest?!
I checked into this beautiful hotel on Saturday afternoon and I miss it already. First I will say that the location is grand! Grant Ave is also the home(literally across the street) to the second largest Chinatown in North America. When you walk out of the slick automatic front doors of the Triton and you turn to the right there's Chinatown just smack dab in your face. Boom, there it is. Tourist attraction one, done. Across the street, not even a whole block, is a market that sales cheese whiz, wine, beer, grey goose, toothpaste, q-tips, canned green beans, lottery tickets, and frozen smoothie mix. I was like 'what kind of collection of items!?!?!' But they had everything I needed directly across the street from the Triton without having to drive 15 minutes through city traffic to the local Target. Maybe a half a block in the other directions was a mother ship headquarters(Starbucks) so everything was very very close including the Golden gate bridge(11 min away) The airport was a 24 minute drive but from there uber and lyft the the pier 39 an all the other lovely places are inside the $20 range.
Now onto Katie! She was soooooo super helpful! With everything! I called before we got there to inquire about parking and she had some great suggestions along with their own valet services. She also had a great watering hole suggestion for us weary travelers. She said it was closed off to the tourists but we might get in by association! lol! It was a great little pub with nicely priced domestic drafts.
She was so hilariously personable and thoughtful! I have reason to believe they were understaffed that busy Saturday but she took good care and we never experienced a line. Not even to check out. There are wonderful decorations all over the place including $700 head-dresses from Africa and she's all like 'ppl always try and touch them and I just make sure to have a card on file if they can't be dissuaded!' Hilarious... just tickled me pink she did.
The rooms are a bit small but I think that added to the homey character along with the chalk boards and handwriting wallpaper. There are fire escapes on every floor at the end of the hall and someone might enjoy a morning coffee looking out that small window onto the city streets. The linen was clean and our items were all in the room when we returned and found that the sheets and towels had been replenished.
The lady that dropped off our towels was even amazingly professional and friendly.
I would recommend this place as a couple's getaway or a business stay but nothing for families unless you want to purchase additional rooms. This place is located in the heart of anything that matters in downtown San Fran and that makes it even better. And my final reason for suggesting this place mostly because of the customer service. Katie impressed me so much by handling that lobby with swift calm precision. She manned the phones and helped me park and check in and even found me a fork for my Chipotle. Her bar suggestion was great and her city knowledge cost me $4 in parking meter money because there was so much to see where she suggested we go! Thanks Katie...
Read moreFirst things first, this is not a 4* hotel (no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms and you have to request housekeeping 24 hours in advance).
Secondly, it’s worth mentioning, all the staff we encountered were lovely; the two ladies that checked us in on Saturday were super friendly and welcoming (sorry I never caught their names). They complimentary upgraded us as we were celebrating our honeymoon, which was a welcome touch. The gentleman that was on the desk most mornings was also great, we asked him quite a few questions and he suggested we went to Roxanne Cafe for breakfast (2 blocks away and TOTALLY worth it). Finally, Heleina who checked us out was really lovely and friendly too.
The room was cosy but adequate, the bed was huge! Sink outside the bathroom is an odd design but it works quite well! Blackout blinds & curtains kept the light out and we had a great city view. We slept very well all 4 nights.
Housekeeping (on the 1 occasion we requested them) did a great job. A standard 12pm checkout is also generous for a city hotel and we greatly appreciated this.
Breakfast - get ready to carb up! Muffins, croissants, bagels, whole fruits and juices accompanied urns of coffee & hot water. It was an odd experience in ‘the study,’ although better than the first morning where it was served in the lobby, where there is limited seating. The study is interestingly decorated, with ‘metal’ panelling on the ceiling and red/black table cloths. Worth mentioning the lady topping up the food was ‘on it’ and things were frequently replenished. We ate out the other 2 mornings as our stomachs couldn’t handle carb-only every day.
Happy hour - a nice touch but there’s a catch…you have to pay an ‘urban amenity fee.’ The hotel claim this is advertised on all booking sites (which checking Expedia it’s listed as a ‘resort fee’), however they then use posters in the lift saying ‘complimentary happy hour’ or ‘complimentary breakfast.’ It’s not complimentary if you’re paying $42 a day for it! We did argue this on checkout and they kindly reduced the charge to 2 nights, rather than 4. I also wasn’t happy paying this as they tried to claim it as tax, to which I laughed and said no it’s not! 2 nights was better than 4 though.
I think this is an awful business approach and management should be ashamed of themselves. It was apparent the staff didn’t agree with this policy as there was no fight to make us pay all 4 nights and the look of embarrassment was abundant on their faces.
The location of the hotel was great, walking distance to North Beach, China Town & the financial district. However we wouldn’t return out of principle due to the...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed here for 2 weekend nights in early May 2019. We are senior citizens and tourists. Our visit to the hotel started out very poorly when the front desk person told us that there is an extra fee charged at the hotel -- a $29 fee for urban amenities. The clerk mentioned that the fee applies to all hotels in SF, and the fee is required. But that's not correct. It's just a ripoff. Some SF hotels charge the fee, usually $25 (not $29), but don't be fooled by what the hotel tells you. This fee is added-on by greedy hotel operators, at their discretion. The fee was not mentioned when I booked the room online. This surprise fee is aggravating! If not for the $29 fee, I would give the hotel four or five stars because it's a great place to stay in the city. We were happy staying there. The corner where Hotel Triton is located is a wonderful urban corner that has a lovely bistro restaurant, a Starbucks, and the entry arch to Chinatown across the street.... and with just a 2-block walk you find terrific upscale shopping with stores like Bananna Republic, Coach, Hermes and Brooks Brothers. Inside the hotel the decor is very interesting and unusual. The lobby decor is cute, artsy, whimsical, and eclectic. Nothing matches and nothing is the same. Inside the elevators, the walls are wrapped in murals evoking urban scenes, probably scenes of France. Interestingly, I liked the common hallways upstairs on my floor because there were windows that were opened, with fresh air ventilating through the corridor, there was plenty of natural light in the hallways, and the corridor walls were nicely decorated, creating a homey, casual feel as you walk to and from your room (most hotel corridors are lifeless, dull and dark). The upstairs corridors are almost as funky and eclectic-looking as the lobby. Our king bed room was very small and had a single small window looking out into an alleyway (no view). The room was nicely decorated but seemed dark, lacking natural light, and the room had some rough edges such as exposed wiring near the baseboard. The bathroom had partial marble touches and the shower was very good. There is no coffee in the room and no free breakfast, but coffee is available in the lobby during early morning hours and possibly all day. I paid about $280 per night for the room, not including the $29 amenity fee. I like this hotel because it is different and unique, and because it's located in a fine urban neighborhood, but I just can't get past...
