My girlfriend and I visited San Francisco this past week. Our original plan was to save money and book a hotel near the SFO airport. After careful consideration, the desire to stay in the city instead, and reading countless reviews on lower-cost hotels, THE ORCHARD GARDEN seemed to be the obvious choice. The reviews for this hotel were consistently 5-star.
And, I must say, this was an exceptional hotel and overnight stay for us. We arrived around 4 pm and were able to park in the white zone in front of the hotel and unload, check in, and get our luggage upstairs (8th-floor room) before needing to move our vehicle.
The hotel was offering parking discounts on and off during Covid, but when we arrived were told that is no longer the case. They offer you a list of places to park, but I would recommend the Sutter-Stockton garage for about $44 a night (about half that price if you park after 6 pm). The garage is across the street from the hotel, however being that it's a one-way street, you have to drive around the block to come in from the back. It's a bit of a pain, but at least the walk from the garage to the hotel is about a minute.
The hotel room itself is small but sufficient. We had a king bed. Room was very clean and nicely decorated. The bed was amazingly comfortable None of the city noise kept us awake. There was a small box of really delicious chocolates that welcomed us, which I thought was a nice added touch. The hotel offers filling stations on the 1st and 7th floors that allow you to fill up a carafe and have water available to you.
We knew in advance from reading reviews that breakfast at this hotel was way too expensive. Though convenient, we avoided it altogether. There are two Starbucks within a 1-minute walking distance from the hotel if you want coffee and a quick bite. We didn't investigate any breakfast eateries beyond that but I would recommend if you want to save some money, find out what is in the area prior to your stay.
The hotel does demand you wear a mask while inside. This is as of August 2022. The staff was very friendly. When we were loading our vehicle with luggage after our stay, one of the staff members came out and helped us. That kind of effort shows how customer-orientated this hotel is.
The hotel is in a nice area, directly next to the Chinatown gate. A cable Car to Fisherman's Wharf is about 2 blocks up the hill from the hotel. If you take a cab it costs under $20 with a tip.
The hotel is in a centralized and safe area. We felt safe walking the surrounding streets. We would absolutely stay here again. Highly...
Read moreMy niece and I stayed at this hotel September 14-17. We loved the hotel and highly recommend it to others! The moment we walked in I knew we picked the right place. The hotel is clean, has character and just felt inviting. We were greeted by Aaron a kind and helpful youngman who made our check-in experience so welcoming and straight forward. Within 15 minutes of getting in our room, I received a text welcoming me as a guest and asking how everything is with my room. Both my niece and I were impressed with same. I received a few more texts throughout or stay checking in on us which made me feel cared for as a guest. The hotel is very clean, quiet, and the staff are friendly. Our room was clean, bright and the furniture looked great and mattress and bedding quality were super comfy. We slept very well. I looked forward to every time we came back to the hotel after being out as it was so calm and quiet perfect for relaxing. Our rooms were cleaned daily with option of clean linens as this is an eco-friendly hotel. Even your room lights etc. are controlled with your room key so you are not wasting energy by forgetting to turn lights off or your thermostat kicking in and running when you are not in your room. Another win for us were the refillable water stations. The hotel location is great for walking in San Fran and close to so many sites (3-20 minute walks pending where you wanted to go). But other transit was always available. A key note for me while we stayed was there was the fact that there were no people loitering outside the building and my niece and I felt safe walking around at night. Of course like anything one always must be mindful of their surroundings.
We will definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family and I will be staying...
Read moreMy partner and I had an interesting stay at OGH. The hotel is located in a safe and transit-friendly area, relatively clean, and quite quiet (although we could somehow clearly hear a neighbor’s FaceTime call one afternoon yet heard nary a peep for the rest of our stay). In comparison to some of the other 4-star hotels in the area, this hotel checks most boxes and at a more moderate price point too. Our primary gripe with the hotel, and why we wouldn’t classify this as a perfect stay, was the service. I’m not entirely sure if this is a universal or singular issue since we didn’t personally witness any other guest interactions; however, aside from the initial check-in (I didn’t catch her name, but the young lady who checked us in was lovely, efficient, and professional), my partner and I were either completely ignored or treated with total, and borderline rude, indifference by the front desk staff. We’re not picky travelers by any means and don’t expect staff to fawn over our every need, but it did feel a bit strange to be either blatantly ignored, spoken to in a brusque and cold manner whenever we stopped by the front desk, or blankly glared at without greeting as we entered and exited the premises. Perhaps some staff members were having a tough day; it’s not an easy job, we understand. However, this behaviour persisted throughout our entire week-long stay. If the price were right, I think we’d consider staying here again given the hotel does have a lot going for it and SF is an expensive city; however, it won’t be our first choice...
