I don’t know what all the hype is about, but this place was an absolute disaster from start to finish. First off, the ambiance—if you enjoy sitting in a loud, cramped space with lighting so dim you need night vision goggles, then maybe you’ll love it. I, however, prefer to see my food before I eat it.
Speaking of food, I’ve had better meals from a microwave dinner. The hummus tasted like it came straight from a sad, grocery-store container, and the falafel was so dry I nearly chipped a tooth. I took one bite and immediately started questioning all of my life choices that led me to this moment.
Service? Let’s just say I’ve had deeper, more meaningful interactions with a vending machine. Our server looked like they’d rather be anywhere else and forgot half our order. By the time the food actually arrived, I had aged approximately 10 years.
To top it off, the bill was way too high for what felt like a glorified fast-food experience. I left hungry, frustrated, and in need of therapy.

Read moreSababa one of my go-to places for lunch on the days that I don't get lunch at work (I work at a tech company and we get lunch 3x a week). It's an easy walk from Market St, meaning it's accessible by public transit (BART, MUNI, etc.). Besides its location, the staff are friendly and efficient, and the hours are decent - although they're closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Anyway, what you probably really want to read about is the food. The food at Sababa is omg oh-so-good. One of my favourite things to get here is the pita sandwich with chicken and allll the toppings. They make the pitas themselves in a big oven. The falafel is good here as well but I find it to be a bit inconsistent. I guess it depends on what time of day you day you come by and/or if they've been sitting around for a while. Usually they're good, but every now and then I'll have the falafel and it'll be somewhat hard or dry, so I generally stick to the chicken.
Just writing about it is making me hungry, and I'm already looking forward to coming back...
