This is a good option for travelers on a budget who are willing to rent a smaller room with shared bathroom and shower. I never heard and rarely saw other guests in the hotel in the 4 nights I was there, so sharing the facilities didn’t prove to be a problem. Note that they have both external-facing, and courtyard rooms. There is some traffic noise in the external-facing rooms, but nothing any worse than most other rooms in the downtown area, so if you’re a light sleeper not used to sleeping with earplugs, you should request a courtyard room. The room has a small desk, and a refrigerator and freezer that is bigger than almost any room other than a condo rental. It also has a sink and mirror. It seemed not very full when I visited, and the other people staying there looked like quiet business travelers from other countries.|Most of the rooms are designed for the single traveler (the full beds are against the wall on one side, so on person would need to crawl over to get out.). Rooms are about 100 square feet (12 x 8 for my “full bed” room). I also wouldn’t recommend it for someone who was going to spend a lot of time working in the room (the chair is not that comfortable), or reading a book or watching TV (again, no comfortable place to sit unless you go down to their lounge)|On the plus side, the hotel is in a great location, a few blocks north of Union Square, and in sight of the Lion Gate for China Town, as well as a few blocks away from the financial district. The internet was adequate for a Teams Meeting (has 20Mbps down, 2 Mbps up). The rooms were clean, and the bed was comfortable with a newer mattress. The biggest plus is rates near $100 per night, versus $300 per night or more for the competition, so it was nice to save more than $600 during my 4-night stay. |In terms of areas for improvement, rather than the usual “office chairs”, they have simple (but high-quality) wooden chairs at the desk, with no padding, which got uncomfortable after a few minutes (I improvised with a bed pillow, which helped but wasn’t always comfortable). They also lacked a plug strip or outlets on the desk to plug in your computer or phone charger. The carpet in the hallways and on the stairs was pretty worn, and the water in the two second floor showers was too cold to use (never over ~75F / 23C; the water was fine in the first floor bathrooms). On my floor, the shower-tub room had a door that wouldn’t lock, and another that couldn’t be closed due to a faulty door closer – obviously, they need a better maintenance staff. Finally, it would have been nice if the room key unlocked the entrance door the way it does at most hotels. If the front desk attendant has stepped away from the desk, you need to wait for them to return to get into the hotel. Fortunately, nothing in the room itself was wrong. If they rectified these items, I would have given them 5 stars rather than three. For the money, it’s a pretty good value, though. And I would definitely consider staying here in the future for conference attendance, and saving the hundreds of dollars that I otherwise would have spent at the...
Read moreThis may be my fault for not reading reviews, but I did check out the rating and website - which was deceptive, to say the least.
I came to SF for a week-long business trip and had to book a hotel last minute, The Urban Hotel looked perfect - great food, bars, sightseeing all around, and open rooms! However, this is absolutely not a hotel.
I went to my room to find a window facing a cement wall and no bathroom, ran around the hall to discover community bathrooms & showers - realized this is a hostel - and a clean one at that, but it would not meet my needs. My low rating is not for the quality of the HOSTEL, but for the way my needing to cancel was handled.
Despite having a full house the night before, they allowed me to check in early (before 3). After 20 minutes in my room and trying to figure out my options, I cancelled my reservation for that night and the rest of the week just after 3 - where I was told I would need to pay for that night (ugh, but understandable and I did not argue) and I needed to wait until 4 for the manager. At 4, the manager is nowhere to be found, but the woman at the front desks calls her and hands me the phone, over the counter, with a line of guests waiting. The manager tells me I have to pay for 2 nights because they have a 24 hour cancellation policy. I explained my reasoning and the time I cancelled (since I had to wait for an hour) to be interrupted consistently and met with absolutely no understanding, I don't even think the woman heard a word out of my mouth. I'm not one to cause a scene, especially when people are trying to check in and enjoy their stay, I just had a different situation and had to leave. Rather than meeting me with the same sensibility, the manager eventually ended with "I hope you understand' - and a 10% discount, and hung up - leaving me and the woman working the front desk confused.
So, I was charged $637 (that's with my discount), $300 is rough enough, but I could understand that. Again, the hostel wasn't bad, the manager was just INCREDIBLY unprofessional and offered no understanding. I could add on I had been travelling for 4+ hours with no food and I came down with a cold the day before - so I was not feeling well - maybe I'm overreacting - but $637 is no joke, especially when having to find somewhere else to stay because this place claims to be a hotel.

Read moreGreat stay at the urban hotel. Stayed during week of April 2022.
The hotel itself is right near the entrance to Chinatown in front of the gate. Its right in the corner. Every time that you need to access the hotel you would need to dial 01 to buzz in and front desk will buzz you in. Wait for the the door to make a clicking sound before you pull. I would've liked if we can use our hotel card key to open the door rather than buzzing in every time you entry. Could be a security measure?
Upon entry the front desk was nice and checked me in. The rooms are private and mine was a bunk bed. The bed itself was comfy. Let me say that it was rather cool/cold in the hallways and room itself. They did not turn on heat or i am guessing April the heat doesn't turn on during this timeline. I saw everyone in sweaters and jackets. So that be aware. The room itself is cosy and can be cold at night BUT, you get a huge comforter which is very warm. The con of the bed was it was very SQUEAKY. every time you would move around in your bed you will hear a squeaking noise my advise EAR PLUGS!! Also i was in room 216 and my room faced Bush St. Which is the front main street and it was very noisy! In the morning at 7am you don't need an alarm there is this random man that comes into the corner and he starts singing like a Mariachi it goes from 7am - 12pm. So there goes your sleep. He makes an awesome Alarm clock tho and you won't be able to sleep unless you got really good earplugs to block him out.
Each floor has about 3 Restrooms (Unisex) and 3 bathrooms (Unisex). I really liked how i never had to wait or i can go around the corner and use the next one. Let me say that both Restroom and Bathroom (Shower) was very very clean! Very tidy up and well maintained. Although shared it was very clean upon every visit.
I would def come back and stay here again due to price...
