I love the fierce loyalty the fans and locals have for their burrito/taco shops, but sadly most if not all have never had burrito's/tacos and Mexican food all across the country to really know regional differences in marinade, tortilla, rice, beans, condiments, even style of guacamole. I consider my Mexican food palate refined as I've been to over 200 shops in 8 states on both sides of the border and even though I went here late and after heavy drinking it was overall a sad state of affairs for Northern California Mexican food let alone the San Francisco Mission Style burrito.
Taqueria La Cumbria, home of the mission style burrito. What is a mission style burrito you ask? Well I looked it up online and it's a large flour tortilla wrapped in foil and filled with rice, beans, meat, and other condiments like guacamole, sour cream and eaten by unwrapping the foil slowly as you go down and pouring salsa with each subsequent bite. If you've never been and are a bit more mainstream this Chipotle. The flour tortilla is a west coast thing.
With that being said I didn't enjoy the carne asada, I loved how it was fresh cut to order, but not fresh cooked, it didn't have that sizzle off the grill freshness and the flavor was forgettable. The salsa's were ok, but the flavors didn't differentiate and or pop and the fresca was bland. The burrito overall was lacking in that each of the flavors were ok, but the melding and the flavor in each bite left me regretting not getting adobada or using a hotter salsa. The guacamole was the thicker kind with no noticeable lemon and no visible cilantro/onions
Like most shops in the area they were open late night, so I did go here after hitting up some nightlife and yes it was packed, a good sign. I should have gone the extra mile, literally and gone to La Taqueria, which apparently I hear make a larger rice less mission...
Read morecharges to much and isn't even organic, 16$ for a burrito and a aqua fresca is insane and they didn't even have any tomatoes!!! It is beyond me how a businesses can charge so much and people are ok with it, is this gentrification at it's finest??!?! Using the dollar to make us fight with each other when we could feed each other!!! ALMOST 17$ for just one person to eat is insane and they didn't even tell us they didn't have tomatoes until after they had already made the burrito!!! I asked for just 1$ back because they didnt't have tomatoes and they expected us to pay full price for something that isn't advertised, apparently tomatoes are a big deal and the employee needed the manager to explain they could only giver us one quarter back for not having tomatoes after charging extra for chips and steak without even letting us know (yes they do ave a hidden sign saying steak cost an extra 1$ or 1.50$) it would cost extra and having the nerve to then take the quarter from the tip jar, i explained to them it should come from the register from the owner not the employees who shouldn't have to pay for the bad service, sad to see you can't even get a good mission burrito anymore, authentic or not if i'm going to spend 16 or 17$ I will take it to an Organic Vegan restaurant that at least has compassion for the world and there employees and customers like Gracias Madre, even if it cost's an arm and a leg I know it will be worth it and people are kinder and more deserving of my business. We should all work together and stop supporting business's that don't support there employees or the environment around us, far...
Read moreSadly disappointed in my most recent visit to my old time favorite burrito spot in SAN Francisco. I first tried La Cumbre Taqueria back in 2010 after seeing an episode of Man Vs Food and then weeks later having an opportunity to visit san Francisco. I took my friend a SF Native who said "nothing can beat his favorite burrito place" and so went to La Cumbre and I got a steak super burrito and he did also. The items were amazingly fresh and my friend that day converted to a La Cumbre lover and I had one of the best burritos of my life.
That was in 2010. A decade later the food quality is completely different. My tortilla seemed old and soggy, the meat was chewy and not seasoned at all, I got a deluxe burrito yet there was no sour cream or guacamole, there was no salsa after asking for extra s pi cy, and the service was rude and terrible.
I am no longer surprised to see there is no lines or crowds at La Cumbre but the surrounding restaurants are booming on a friday night.
It's sad to see such a good restuarant fall from it's one time glory... I hope this is just a one off experience and that I am wrong but the last several times I've been here or walked by it's been empty
If the owners read this I hope it encourages you to go back to providing the food that got you on, what was at the time, the most popular food show on television. Whatever you did to attract Anthony Bourdain to your attention do that again because it worked and I loved it.
I am rooting for you guys I really am and pray for your health, success and happiness. GOD...
