Picaro — Restaurant in San Francisco

For our girl's trip, I was thinking of tapas and sangria. And my aunt quickly suggested PICARO. After looking at the reviews, I immediately responded YES!!! Unfortunately, this place stopped opening for lunch. That's a bummer!!! Our reservations were at 5pm. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to change the time to 6pm. The staffs were cooperative and changed our reservations to 6pm without any hassle. Drinks - We ordered 4 pitchers of Sangria and we all agreed that it was delicious and refreshing. The fruits infused in sangria were great. If you order prior to 7pm then you get happy hour special which is $3 off. It was a great deal. I would totally recommend sangria to anyone visiting this restaurant. Food - we ordered several tapas and the paella. My favorite was the shrimp tapa, the bread and sauce (tasty). The sauce had a nice spicy kick. Overall the food was scrumptious. Paella was good but I expected it to extra flavorful. Otherwise it was good. Restrooms - they have two bathrooms but as always there can be a long line for women. I ended up using men's bathroom. Only suggestion for this place is to change the bathroom signs to gender neutral to eliminate the long wait lines. Service- The waiter had difficulty understanding us. But he was friendly and got the orders right. And we inquired about the peanuts since one of the girls were allergic.. So we do know this place does not cook food in the peanut oil. Overall, the service was very fast. And they brought dishes to our tables as they were cooked. They didn't keep these hungry girls waiting and waiting. Ambiance- is great. We had reservations for 4 people but there wasn't anyone around to greet any guests so we waited in the doorway for awhile.

In order of best to worst: Champinones Mushrooms sauteed with garlic and olive oil. *this was voted the favorite dish among the entire table

Croquetas Creamy and delicious chicken croquettes. *crispy outside, rich and creamy inside

Rabo de Toro Ox-tail stew *I've never had this dish but it felt like a good homemade soup, enjoyed the flavor

Gambas al Ajillo Garlic shrimp. *Great flavor, wish the shrimp was a bit larger

Paella de Longosta Lobster tail paella with calamari and clams. *the paella was in desperate need of salt or seasoning, the lobster tail was cooked nicely and there were 4 so each of us was able to have one *PRO TIP: ask for a side of garlic mayo - you'll thank me later

Tortilla Potato and onion omelet; one of the most popular Spanish tapas. *Nice and creamy, good portion, about 6 slices

Iberico Imported Spanish Iberco ham *Most people have a love or hate relationship with Iberico ham and I am in the latter, I find it too dry and oily and it has an odd flavor for me

SERVICE: Our server had a lot of tables but he tried to be attentive as possible so we were very understanding. The important thing is he was able to put in our 2 pitchers of Sangria in before Happy Hour ended. Overall it was a great meal over fun...

Overall: Lively atmosphere in an evenly spaced out restaurant, or you can sit outside! Excellent service from our main waiter and the other staff. Good variety of standard, no frills tapas to share amongst groups at very affordable prices. We had a better experience with the seafood dishes in comparison to the mostly overcooked meat. Would come back again if someone suggests to as there are many dishes I didn't get a chance to try. But don't come with high expectations!

Food: Every dish was reasonably priced. The Parillada (meat platter) was hugely portioned, but most of the meats were overcooked and rendered dry. Alcachofas (grilled artichoke) was one of the favorites even though it was a tad oily. The mussels, oysters, calamari, and shrimp tapas were standard fare that matched their prices.

Dessert: Flan was of thin consistency and was accompanied with a thin, watery caramel. Crema Catalana was smooth and seemed like it had an essence of ginger; otherwise, it's a solid pick.

Service: Our waiter was accommodating, attentive when needed, and friendly. We never felt rushed out and ensured to remove an item that was inadvertently added to our bill.
