Quality of fish was excellent but the rice was a little hard and cold for my sushi tasting and the fish is sliced thinner, which I personally like, but it should have really been 8-10 pieces not 6 when it's sliced that thin. I'm also comparing it to the sashimi tasting that my friend had. Her pieces were well portioned so I would say skip the sushi tasting until they adjust and give it some more weight and make better rice. Friend was a little annoyed that one of the fish in her tasting was quite bland (more likely the fish's fault and unsure if chef do taste a tiny piece before cutting and distro). I also ordered a negi toro handroll that was oily and delicious but when I ordered it again for my friend to try and another for me (trying to get full), it wasn't the same oilyness and the fish looked a lot brighter than the dark red of the first one. Unsure what happened there. Last, we ordered both the matcha panna cotta and yuzu cheesecake, another attempt at trying to get full. It took a little long to come out considering these desserts are premade. Cheesecake was delicious and not strong with yuzu so you won't get that sour tang and the lime sauce was good but the portion was quite tiny. The panna cotta was pretty and tasted as expected which is not a good thing. At this level of dining, we should be surprised and not be able to predict the flavor like with the cheesecake. Also, the panna cotta didn't set. It was a bit soft and a tiny bit runny. Overall, I won't be coming back nor recommending because I couldn't get full and service was slow when restaurant wasn't even filled. Also, considering I live 5 minutes away from Mujiri in the Eastbay which serves 7 pieces of nigiri and a cut roll for a reasonable price in which their fish is of high quality, but not quite as excellent as Sato, and having had omakase with Bou in NYC and spent 40% less and got 100% full by comparison. Staff was friendly but ambiance was boring and decor was typical and didn't enjoy being able to hear staff getting corrected, I didn't sign up for...

Read moreWe had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, so we made plans to go on New Year's Eve, 2024. We sat in the front dining room area with the bar, not in the back. The atmosphere was nice, the music was soft and it wasn't too crowded so my husband and I can actually hear each other. So, it started out well but went downhill afterwards. The food tasted ok, it wasn't amazing, we definitely had better sashimi and sushi elsewhere. But the portions compared to what they were charging was what bothered us. It was very little food, even the donburi we ordered were appetizer size, but they were over $30+. If the food tasted amazing, we would have forgiven the portions, but it was hard to overcome it since it tasted just average. We literally had to go get a second dinner somewhere else because we left hungry.
But what was more disappointing was that there was only 1 server attending to many tables out in the dining room area, and therefore, the service was very slow. I guess maybe the restaurant focuses more service for the back area where they have the omakase? We felt bad for the 1 server that was running around seating people, taking orders, serving and taking away plates all by himself, but not bad enough to be ok with the automatic 20% service fee they charge. If they are going to have that policy for every table (not just a large party) then they need to make sure the service is good/not slow.
In the end we were out $200+ for an unsatisfying meal with lacking service. We won't be going back, and we certainly will not be recommending this...
