I was wandering along in San Francisco on my way to visit the bookbinder museum when I met the owner of The Box SF, Mark. When I told him I was interested in books and other historical items, he graciously invited me to enter his shop. The outside is discrete and belies how magical the inside space truly is. When you enter, you're immediately blown away by the vintage art and artifacts everywhere. Mark and his assistant, Israel, gave me a mini-tour and explained how the shop specializes in ephemera, which refers to items that were designed for short-term use (advertising prints, perfume bottles, soap labels, etc). The shop contains items from the mid-1800s to the early-1900s from around the world. Everything is in great condition and attests to the craftsmanship of earlier time periods. What was supposed to be a quick 20-30 minute visit turned into a 2-hour visit. Everywhere you turn, there's something new to take in. I love antique and thrift stores, yet I have never encountered anything as unique as The Box. I found some souvenirs to take home with me and even the wrapping paper was this cool, historical print. The Box is a treasure trove for people who love vintage, antique, or novel artifacts. If that's your style, you have to visit.

My studio booked the Willy, Webster, and Buddy suites at The Box SF for some off-site press interviews and presentations held over the course of two days during a busy conference week. The venue and staff exceeded all expectations and it was a pleasure hosting our event here with them.

The venue and the suites themselves are distinct, characteristic, and iconic. The suites and intermediary spaces are all warm and full of character through the presence of existing wall/floor decor, cabinets, and furniture. Each room emanated a sense of coziness and lovingly-lived-in-ness that is so divergent from the stark and sterile typical hotel meeting room/event-space. This made it very easy for all our guests and clients to relax and ease into the space, a welcomed oasis and reprieve from the hustle and bustle of that conference week. Some even took additional time to browse the mercantile downstairs!

The staff at The Box SF - Mark, Melanie, and Israel - were just the best to work with as well. They were attentive, accommodating, and astute, checking in with us throughout setup each event day and helping us resolve every question or concern that we brought up. They were also wonderful to talk with as well during downtime, sharing knowledge and stories about the building, the area, and the collection they have downstairs.

Finally, the mercantile on the first floor is a literal treasure trove of history. It houses print and advertisement pieces across different forms of media. I lost track of time just going through and exploring this collection. Beyond that, it was easy to pick out a unique gift for a friend of mine. This place is a permanent staple on any future trips I make back to the city.

Please consider The Box SF as a venue or as a place to check out if the above resonates with you! Overall, I had a wonderful time and I am looking forward to when I can cross paths with the this space and its...

We booked The Box SF during a busy conference week for a series of offsite interviews and meetings, held over two days. Having managed small- to large-scale events, I’ve had my fair share of horror stories when it comes to venue logistics.

The staff at The Box SF have set an impossibly high bar: they were so accommodating, responsive, and flexible. No nickel-and-diming, no hidden fees or confusing contracts. They were invested in ensuring we had a successful event, and their bedside manner was top-notch.

The venue itself is amazing. Even in its natural state, it’s very turnkey! It doesn’t take much for the space to feel lived-in and ready for your event. Every guest remarked on how special and interesting the space was, and some even stayed a little while longer to check out the mercantile downstairs.

The collection of antique ephemera in the shop is incredible—a true collector’s playground. Everything is for sale, and the staff are so knowledgeable. I picked up a few gifts for friends that are truly one-of-a-kind.

I cannot recommend The Box SF enough as both a venue and a point of interest if you’re in the area. Mark, Melanie, and Israel made such a positive impression, and I can’t...
