It's a very special place. First of all the space is multi-sided with a small room in the back for traditional dining tables. outside in an inner Courtyard in what used to be a parking area more tables and a loungy sort of area. The driveway is now a beautiful bar with seating at the bar and small rear tables. Through a doorway from the bar there's another club with louder music and dancing actually. Darker with a different party vibe but barely noticable when you arrive at the bar and move back to the restaurant. A very large bouncer for all of this. The restaurant itself does not have a huge number of tables so a reservation is required. Service was excellent. Prices premium. But you get some very well thought out food carefully and thoughtfuly prepared, some of it for the taste and some of it for the, well, food... The menu is not huge but they had a few special items for the day. I had a filet mignon $$$ which did not disappoint with potatoes cooked in a way that was absolutely incredible. Thin sliced into these very small layers. Scallop appetizer was refreshing and unusual. Not for the volume but for the taste. My wife had a fish with noodles which was very good. Tables were a little too close together and they have space to spread them out a bit so they should fix that. Not quite New York City style...but still. If we remained quiet we could hear clearly the conversations of the three tables on our side. Bar and restaurant played music for my generation. Lots of Tito Rodriguez...not too...
Read moreIn a word, excellent! On the outside The Sunset Club PR is unassuming, almost a “gotta know somebody” VIP type place vibe going on. Not at all. Open air, the spacious bar gives way to an explosively large courtyard. Behind the courtyard is the cool air dining area. The atmosphere is great. The look of this place is something one might see in a major movie. I was there for a soft opening, limited menu engagement. I do not drink alcohol. The bartender created a mock tail for me that was delicious. I did not miss the alcohol at all. First appetizers, beautiful raw oysters. Rockefeller also offered. Then smoked scallops in a milky broth. Awesome! For the main, a sizable, perfectly cooked medium rare filet mignon on a potato purée. I wondered why no steak knife was provided until I effortlessly cut into the steak with a butter knife. Literally cut like butter. Desert was a choice between a pecan and sweet plantain bread pudding, and a “coconut cloud” whipped coconut crème on a bed of crushed nuts. My party had multiples of both. Amazing!!! Chef Kate is more than a chef. Her passion for food is palpable. She not only described the what of food, but also the where, when, how, and why. Creative beyond the imagination, Chef Kate inspires her crew to create masterpieces from the front of house to the back of house. If this limited opening is any hint of things to come, The Sunset Club PR is in store for great things in the future. I predict Michelin stars for this establishment....
Read moreThis was our first visit to Sunset Club in Loiza. We took an Uber to avoid dealing with parking challenges. The locale is divided in two: at the front you have a lively well-stocked bar area. The restaurant is towards the back.
We were a four tops. We ordered two appetizers: both came promptly and were delicious. The burrata was fresh albeit a bit on the small size. The crudo dish was excellently seasoned. I recommend ordering a side order of focaccia if you are more than 2 people. The focaccia was nice, lightly-seasoned, and fresh.
We had two outstanding entrees. The crab risotto was exquisite and creamy. It is a high difficulty dish to get right and this was excellent. The other dish was the sea bass. It was seasoned enough to let the fish shine. We were a bit surprised that they elected to slice the fillet in three for presentation. If you don't want it that way, ask your server for a modification.
I ordered the ravioli given the high reviews here. The pasta had a great bite. What was a challenge for me was the filling. The filling was meat almost like mechada or beef stew. I think it is a strong dish nonetheless. But next time I'll go with a fish selection.
The star of the meal was one of the desserts we ordered: the almond cake. It was moist yet possessing a nice caramelized crust. Excellent!
This is a very good choice for a restaurant if you are in the San Juan area.
Our service was excellent. The...
